UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
WILLIAM- H. oAsTLEs, 0E NEWARK, NEW JEEsEY.
COMBINED PAPER CLlP, CUTTER, AND RULE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,665, dated September 23, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GAsTLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Paper Clip, Outter, and Rule; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an article of increased utility and convenience, adapted more especially for the use of bookkeepers.
It consists in the new article of manufacture having the parts thereof arranged and combined substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan showing sheets of paper clamped together, and thus formed into a pad, by a metallic clip. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken through line a". Fig. 3 is a plan of the device detached from said paper. Fig. 4 is an end View of the same. Figs. 5,6, and 7 illustrate modified forms of the clip portion of the article or tool.
' In said drawings, a is a paper-cutter,having a handled portion, b, formed by widening the sheet metal and bending or doubling it so as to form a clamp capable of holding by spring action or power the several sheets of paper that may be placed between the jaws b b thereof in fixed relative position. Said clamp or clip may be any shape, or of any construction capable of holding the said paper by said spring action. The cutter a has preferably a sharpened edge, a, adapted to make a in Figs. 1 and 3, which indicate measurements in inches and fractions thereof, or in. other scales. Secured between the clip, and capable of being pulled out without tearing, is arranged, first, at the bottom a piece or sheet of blotting-paper, c, and above this a series of sheets of writing-paper, c, to be used by the book-keeper in making calculations prior to making a final entry in his book. The knifeblade extends across the edge of said sheet, and acts as a support for the same.
The article as a whole, thus constructed, is of great practical utility, inasmuch as it furnishes a blotter, writing-paper upon which to make calculations, a binder for said sheets, said binder answering for a handle whereby the sheets may be readily grasped, a rule and straight-edge for use in making the usual lines in bookkeeping, and a paper-cutter.
Having thus described theinvention, what I claim as new is 1. As a new article of manufacture, the com bined paper clip and cutter, consisting of ametallic strip or blade broadened at one end and bent to form clampingjaws, substantially-as and for the purposes set forth and shown.
2. As anew article of manufacture, the com- I bined paper clip and rule, the same consisting of a metallic plate bent to form clamping-jaws, the closed edge of which plate is impressed with graduations, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of March, 1884.
