UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
wILBEET WEBSTER WHITE, oEXENIA, oIIIo.
COMBINED RULER AND BLOTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,085, dated October 29, 1895.
Appleman filed April 14, 189s.
To all whom it mayeoncem.-
Be it known that I, WILBEET WEBSTER WHITE, of Xenia, in the county of Greene and State 0f Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ruler and Blotter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined rulers and blotters; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in crosssection. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modified form of my improvement.
A represents a ruler, preferably bent cylindrical in form, the overlapping edges or sides a a of which are adapted to grasp and securely hold one edge or side of a blotter.
If desired, the ruler can be made of thin steel or any other elastic metal, while papiermach and wood are well adapted for the same purpose, and when constructed of the latter, as shown in Fig. 3, a saw-cut b is formed therein for the accommodation of one edge or side of the blotter B, which latter, if found necessary, can be held in the cuth by springwedges e, located on the ends thereof.
The open ends of ruler A are adapted to receive and accommodate Stoppers c c', one of which latter is constructed wholly or partially of ink-erasing material, while the other is wholly or partially of material adapted for removing pencil-marks. The stopper c is preferably made entirely of hard rubber, and is designed particularly for erasing ink-marks, while stopper c is preferably constructed entirely of soft rubber, specially adapted for use in removing pencil and like marks from paper.
By thus providing ruler A with Stoppers c c it will be seen that a receptacle for the accommodation of pencils, pens, and like arti- Serial No. 470,374- (No model.)
dificulty is obviated. When it is desired to use the ruler, the latter is placed in the desired position, and instead of holding the same fast by grasping the ruler, as above stated, the desired result is accomplished by simply placing the hand upon the sheet of blotting-paper and firmly pressing thereon, and as the latter is secured to the ruler it will readily be seen that any moving or slipping of the latter will be avoided.
It will also be seen that by this arrangement the work on which the Voperator or user is engaged is prevented by the blotter from being soiled, as the hand when engaged in holding the ruler never comes in contact with the work, but entirely rests on the blotter.
When the device is used as a blotter, the latter can be placed on the writing to be blotted and the ruler rolled, which causes the blotter to be firmly pressed on the writing, thus thoroughly drying the same. However, if desired, the writing can be blotted in the usual way.
A new sheet of blotting-paper can beinserted at any time by merely removing the old sheet and inserting one edge of a new sheet between the jaws or elastic overlapping edges a a.
It is evident that changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be made without avoiding my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangementof parts one edge of which is held beneath this spring shown and described; but, clamp, substantially as set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what In testimony whereof I have signed this 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters specification in the presence of two subscrib- 5 Patent, ising witnesses.
As an article of manufacture a combined A ruler and blotter consisting of a sheet of metal WILBERT WEBSTER WHITE' rolled into cylindrical shape, the free edge Witnesses: overlapping the remaining portion to form a CHAS. I-I. KYLE,
1o spring clamp, and a sheet of blotting paper EMMA M. KYLE.
