MOISTENING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,462, dated December 31, 1895- Application filed August 23, 1.895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES IV. BEISER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moisteuing Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in moistening devices.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved and exceedingly simple and effective envelope-flap or other moistener formed to it on and be actuated by one finger, so as to be most easily and readily manipulated by the same, and wherein a strip of felt or like material is arranged longitudinally on a plate.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts more fully and particularly pointed out hereinafter.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective of the article as in use. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is abot tom plan. Fig. 4 is a top plan. Fig. 5 is an end view. Fig. G is a plan of the block from which the holder or body is bent.

In the drawings, a is the holder or body of the moistener formed of a single piece of thin sheet metal approximately oblong in shape with its outer end a curved or deflected upwardly to form a bearing and stop for the end of the finger resting longitudinally on the upper surface of the plate. The rear end of the plate has the two projections a2 bent upwardly from opposite edges of the plate and over the plate to form a eXible ring or spring clamp to embrace or partially embrace the finger and hold the device thereto preferably, so that the end or outer joint of the finger is free. as constitutes a clamp to secure the strip of felt or other suitable material l) to the under side of the plate at a vpoint preferably about midway of the length of the plate.l This clamp is composed of two arms a3 from opposite edges of about the central portion Serial No. 560,283. of the plate bent under and tightly down on the strip of Y porous material arranged longitudinally on" the under side of the plate, so as to clamp the same with its front end free.

The porous material b is preferably composed of a doubled strip of felt of about the same width as the plate, with its two ends clamped to the under portion of the plate and its free doubled portion at the under end of the plate, so that in use the finger bears longitudinally on the upper side of the plate, and the doubled end of the porous strip is beneath the curved end of the plate and bears up against and around said curved end when applied to the paper or other surface to be moistened. The curved end of the plate thus forms a bearing and stop for the finger end and also a rounding bearing for the wet felt.

It is evident that various changes might be made in the forms, constructions and arrangements of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the construction shown.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

I. A moistener composed of the plate hav ing the upwardly defiected end, a iinger holder at the rear end of the plate, and the porous material arranged longitudinally of the under side of the plate and at its rear end secured to the middle portion of the plate with its rear end beneath said deflected end.

2. A moistener composed of the plate having the finger holding arms at the upper side of its rear end so that the finger bears longitudinally on the upper side of the plate, the felt strip longitudinally on the under side of the plate, and the clamping arm-s from about the central portion of the plate securing the felt to the central portion of the plate, substantially as described.
