Description
UNITED STATES PTENT FFTGE.
THIIVIBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 26, 1907.
Application filed January 3, 1907. Serial No. 350,624.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Thimble, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved thimble or finger-shield, more especially designed to facilitate the fastening of pin-tickets to cloth or other articles of merchandise without danger of injury to the fingers of the user.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged under face view of the thimble, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing the pin-ticket fastened in place' on the cloth by the use of the thimble.
The body A of the thimble is made of a piece of metal or other suitable material, and on the sides of the body A are hinged the ends of a bail B, extending across the back of the body A and adapted to be slipped over the back of the forefinger of the users hand, so that the inner surface of the forefinger is seated on the hollowed-out back of the body A to securely hold the thimble in place on the users forefinger, as indicated in Fig.1. The outer face of the body A is flat at the middle and slightly out out near the ends in a transverse direction, as indicated at A, and the said outer face of the body A is provided with one or a series of parallel clenchinggrooves A extending in the direction of the length of the body A and increasing in depth from the middle to the cut-out portions, so as to give the groove A an approximately serpentine shape, as Will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3.
In using the thimble or finger-shield the ticket 0, having the usual U-shaped pin D, is taken hold of by the operator having the thimble attached to the forefinger of one hand, and the pin terminals are pressed through the cloth E or other article of merchandise, and then the operator engages the pinterminals with one of the clenchinggrooves A and at opposite sides from the middle of the clenching-groove A New by exerting a pressure against the ticket C and pressing the thimble toward the cloth E the pin-terminals follow the groove A and are thus bent in opposite directions, whereby the pin-terminals are firmly clenched to the back of the cloth E, and the ticket 0 is thus securely fastened in place on the cloth E or other article of merchandise, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig.3.
Instead of the bail B a solid handle may be attached to the back of the body A for using the device with the hand instead of attaching it to the forefinger.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A thimble or finger-shield having a body for attachment to a finger and having its outer face provided with clenching means for engaging the terminals of a pin on a pin-ticket to clench the same.
2. A thimble comprising a body for engagement with the pins of a pin-ticket, and a bail hinged at its ends on the said body and extending across the back of the body.
3. A thimble having a body for attachment to a finger and provided at its outer face with a clenching-groove, the bottom of which is curved in the direction of the length of the groove.
4.. A thimble having a body for attachment to a finger and provided at its outer face With a clenching-groove, increasing in depth from the middle toward the ends, the bottom of the groove being curved in the direction of the length of the groove.
5. A thimble having a body for attachment to a finger and provided at its outer face with a clenching-groove, increasing in depth from the groove being curved in the direction of the length of the groove in a serpentine line.
the middle toward the ends, the bottom of 6. A thirnble having abody for attachment In testimony whereof I have signed my to a finger and provided at its outer face with name to this specification in the presence of Jo ah01Q1lOgH1ggI'OOV(61 iricreasiing i111l dgpth fron; tWo subscribing Witnesses. t e mi e tower t e en s, t e ottom 0 the groove'being curved in the direction of EUGENE BARNETT the length of the groove in a serpentine line Witnesses: and extending from one end of the body to R. P. SHAPARD, the other end thereof. JAMEs T. WRIGHT
