I SPRING CLASP. No. 362,189. Patented May 3, 1887.

N. PETERS. Phaiwulhogmphor, Wuhinflom D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWVIS STEIN, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
SPRING-CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,189, dated May 3, 1887.
Application filed Januaryl'i, 1887. Serial No. 224,510. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIs STEIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved springclasp of that class which is used for stockingsupporters and other garmentsupporting devices; and the invention consists of a springclasp the pivoted sections of which are provided with jaws which are not serrated, the jaw of the main plate being composed of an upwardly and backwardly bent hook, while the jaw of the other section is bent toward the main section, close to the edge of the hookshaped jaw.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent plan views of my improved spring-clasp, and Fig. -3 represents a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main plate or section of my improved springclasp, and B the oscillating plate or section, both of which are provided with upwardlybent cars a b, made integral therewith, said ears being connected by a transverse pivot, d, on which the plate 13 oscillates. A spiral spring, 6, is interposed between the plates A and B of the clasp, the free ends of the spring acting on the rear ends of the plates, so as to press their front ends or jaws together. The rear end of the main plate A is either provided with a slot or with prongs for attaching the clasp to an elastic or other band. The front end of the main plate A is provided with an upwardly and backward] y bent or hook-shaped jaw, 6, while the plate B is provided with a jaw, f, that is bent toward the main plate, close to the edge of the jaw e, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the fabric is taken hold of by the jaws, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The fabric, in being clasped between the jaws e andf, is bent twice at right angles, first at the edge of the hook-shaped jaw e and the second time between the edge of the jaw f and the main plate A. In other words, the fabric is retained by the clamping-pressure exerted by the jaws at two points on the same, and thereby a very effective grip is exerted on the fabric without tearing the same, as the jaws are not serrated, like those of the well-known spring-'clasps heretofore in use.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent A spring-clasp oneplate of which is bent at one end to forina hookshapedjaw,an(lasecond plate pivoted to lugs of the first plate and having its end bent down toward the first plate back of and adjacent to the hook-shaped jaw of the first plate, whereby the edge of the hookshaped jaw faces the down wardly-bent end of the other plate, substantially as shown and described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name intpr es ence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEWIS STEIN.
