0. F. SULLIVAN.
GARMENT SUPPORTER. -1 I0. 374,715. Patented Dec. 13,1887.
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS F. SULLIVAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, 'ASsIeNoE TO FRANK w. LowE, OF SAME PLAoE.
GARM ENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,715, dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed April 16, I887. Serial No. 235,114. (No model.)
To aZZwh'om it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS F. SULLI- VAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to that class of gar ment-holders in which a fold of the garment is inserted into an opening and held by crowding into the narrowest part of the same; but'in those now in use it is found that the fold of the garment works up the wedge-shaped opening and releases the garment.
The object of my invention is to remedy this defect by producing a garmentholder that when applied will retain its hold and not allow the garment to work loose.
The invention consists in making the holder in the form of a hook, with a wedge-shaped opening in the front for retaining the garment, so that when a portion of the garment is inserted and crowded down in the wedge shaped opening the portion that passes between the front and back of the hook will cause the front part of the hook to spring out, allowing it to pass and to be crowded into the lower portion of the hook, when the front part will return to its normal position and prevent the garment working loose.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a garment-holder embodyingmy invention as a sleeve-holder. Fig. 2 is an enlarged View of a garment-holder embodying myinvention. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 shows the garment holder attached to a strap.
The garment-holder is made in the form of a hook, A representing the back, and B the front. The front portion is provided with an I opening, wedge-shaped at the top 0 and nargarment that is between the back and frontof the holder is crowded into the space D, the
front portion of the hook springing out to allow it to pass, and when it is crowded into the lower portion of the hook the front part will return to its normal position and prevent the garment working 'loose. It will be seen that a garment thus held is secured, first, by crowding into the wedge-shaped opening; sec ondly, by crowding between the frontand back of the hook, and, thirdly, by the front part of the hook springing back, so as to come nearly in contact with the back portion. v
At the top part of the back A a hole or slot,
E, is provided for the attachment of a chain, elastic, or other band or strap.
In Fig. 1 I have shown two holders con nected together by a small chain, F; but any other material may be employed.
' In Fig. 4. I have shown the holder secured to the end of a strap, as when used for astocking-supporter.
What I claim as my invention is A garmentsupporter consisting of a single, piece of metal bent into the form of a hook and comprising the back portion, A, with an aperture or slot to secure it to a chain, cord, or webbing, and a front hook portion, B, with the wedge-shaped opening 0 c, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CORNELIUS F. SULLIVAN.
