CUFF-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,456, dated September 21,1886. Application filed June 15, 1886. Serial No. 205,252. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ANDREW WV. SAWYER, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff- Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that classof cuffholders which are adapted for securing the cuff inside of the sleeve of a dress or other garment; and my invention consists in a cuffholder which shall present no sharp points or rough edges or surfaces upon the outside of the sleeve, and which is constructed as herein after described in the specification and set forth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a longitudinal section of my improved cuff-holder. Fig. 2 illustrates a plan Fig; 3 illustrates the cuff-holder as applied to a cuff and dress-sleeve, and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 illustrate modifications.

A is a bent rod, having a spring, vb, at one end, and a tube, B, at the other end.

0 is a spring-clamp secured to the rod A near the spring I), and made as follows: The under part of the clamp is a fiat piece. of metal, 0, riveted to the rod A at (Z. The upper part, 6, of the clamp is corrugated on its under side. Itis hinged to the part c, and has a tongue, f, projecting out beyond the hinge g and bearing upon the spring b. This clamp is intended to hold the edge of the sleeve, and'the force of the spring 1) bearing up against the tongue f will effectually force the part c of the clamp down upon the sleeve and hold it tightly in place.

D is a straight rod having a hook, E, at its outer end, and a flange or pin, h, at its inner end, which is inclosed in the tube B.

The clamp or fastening device 0 may be made so that it may be readily covered with material like the dress, similar to a buttonmold. This will prevent its being conspicuous.

When it is desired to use the holder, the hook E is either fastened to the upper orouter edge of the cuff 'or in, the button-hole of the same in which is thecuff-button, with the rod D and the tube B passingdown the inside of the cuff. The bend of the rod A will be at the bottom or lower edge of the cuff, and the rod A will pass up between the same and the sleeve. The clamp C will then be turned back, so as to get the edge of the sleeve under it, when it is pushed down, and will be held in place against said sleeve by the spring I) and tongue f. (See Fig. 3.) 4

Instead of the clamp 0, it will be evident that a spring-hook may be used.

The hook E, instead of being fastened to the cuff itself, may pass through a hole, is, in the cuff-button G, and thehook may also have a handle, k, for convenience of drawing it back; or a spring key or clamp, L, may be attached to the-end of the rod D (instead of the hook) by a link, on, and this would enter the hole It and hold the cuff-button and cuff in place.

My invention avoids all need of pins for fastening the cuff to the sleeve, and thereby prevents the wearing and fraying of the dress consequent upon the point of the pin becomexposed.
