T. K.- CONWAY.
NEGKTIE PASTENER.
No. 425,865. Patented Apr. 15, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS K. CONWAY, OF IVATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
NECKTlE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,865, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed J anuaryZl, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS K. CONWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new useful Improvements in a Combined Button and Necktie-Fastener; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsv to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined button and necktie-fasteners; and it has for its object to generally improve upon the construction of this class of devices, and at the same time to render the same more efficient and serviceable in operation.
To these ends, and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
' The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined button and necktie-fastener constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a central verticalsection through the device and the necktie secured in place by the fastener. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the button, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the necktie-securing attachment separated from the button. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the strip from which the tiefastener is made.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the disk Serial No. 337,922. (No model.)
or head of the button, and B the shank, said shank being of flat or sheet metal of suitable width and thickness, and is provided at a point near its outer end with an opening 0.
The necktie-fastener attachmentD is made of asingle strip of sheetmetal bent, as shown, to form the hook E, and again bent at E to form the lateral arm F upon the rear face of the hook and extending at right angles to the body of the same. From the angle at which the arm F unites with the hook the rear face of the hook is provided with a longitudinal slit G, which slit extends to the bottom of the hook, thus separating from the back of the hook the strip H, which strip is bent outwardly to form the arm I parallel with the arm F, and both of said arms are sharpened at their ends, as shown, so as to permit of their being readily inserted into the necktie when in use.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. The shank of the button is passed outwardly through the button-hole upon the shirt. The arms F and I of the retaining attachment are passed through the back of the necktie and are bent downwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, after which the hookE is engaged with the opening 0 in the outer end of the shank of the button.
Having thus described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A necktie-fastener attachment consisting of a single piece of metal bent to forma hook, a lateral prong F, extending from a portion parallel with the said hook, and a lateral prong I, extending substantiallyparallel with the prong F, said fastener being adapted to be secured to a tie and the hook portion to engage the apertured shank of the button, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS K. OONWVAY. WVitnesses:
J AS. J. IVIADDEN, JOHN H. MORAN.
