UNITED STATES PATENT cam.
\VILLIAM MORRISON SWIFT MILLER, OF SEWICKLEY, PENNSYLVANIA; A
N ECKTlE-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,963, dated April 11, 1899.
Application filed March 23, 1898- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MORRISON SWIFT MILLER, of Sewickley, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Necktie-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is a necktie-fastener of that class in which the fastener is attached to the collar-button or collar at the front of the person and provided with means by which the necktie may be connected with the fastener, so as to hold the necktie in place.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention in use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the invention attached to the collar-button and dissociated from the collar. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the invention, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the collar-button designed for use in connection with my invention.
The collar-button employed in connection with the invention has a base-flange 5, from which a shank 6 projects forwardly, and the head 7 of the button is provided with a groove 8 in each side, the grooves 8 extending vertically, as may be understood by reference to the drawings, particularly Figs. 2 and 4.
The fastener is constructed of an integral length of wire bent to produce a narrow vertically-extending loop 9. the parallel runs of which are designed to fit, respectively, into the grooves 8 of the head 7 of thecollar-button. The fastener has its main portion eX- tended horizontally on each side of the loop 9 and is provided at each end of such main portion with downwardly-directed returnbends 10, forming seats, in which the lower Serial No. 674:;910. (No model.)
edge of the collar is received, as shown in Fig. 1. Intermediate of the bends 10 and forming part of the said body portion of the fastener the fastener is provided with a forwardly and upwardly extending run 11, forming an elongated loop, with whichis engaged the necktie. This loop or run 11 is located in front of the collar when the fastener is in place, as shown in Fig. 1.
In using the device it is placed in position, as shown in Fig. 1, and the necktie being ongaged with the run orloop 11 is held securely in place. This device being attached firmly to the collar-button is incapable of lateral dislocation, which disadvantage is common to the majority of necktie-fasteners. My invention, however, is connected firmly both with the button and the collar, so that displacement is quite impossible.
The wire of which the fastener is formed should be resilient, so as to permit springing it in and out of place by the intentional act of the person using it. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- A necktie-fastener constructed of a length of Wire bent to form a narrow vertically-extending loop for engaging the front of the collar-button, and the fastener having a main portion extending horizontally on each side of the said loop, such main portion having at each end a downwardly-directed return-bend adapted to engage under the lower edges of the collar, and the body portion of the fas tener having a forwardly and upwardly extended run intermediate of said loops and forming an elongated transverse loop capable of lying at the front of the collar and of be ing engaged by the necktie to 'hold the same.
WILLIAM MORRISON SWIFT MILLER. Witnessesz' M. SWIFT DAVIS, W. O. MILLER.
