UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IDA IV. PENNEY, OF FORT THOMAS, KENTUCKY.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,516, dated May 23, 1899;
Application filed November 7,1898. Serial No. 695,677. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IDA IV. PENNEY, of Fort Thomas, Campbell county, Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to removable buttons or studs for fastening collars to shirts, waists, and the like.
In collar buttons as usually constructed provision is only made for securing the collar to the garment, so that with standing collars the necktie is very apt to work its way up over the collar both at front and back. To guard against this creeping of the necktie at the back, it has long been customary to form the button with an elongated head, under which the tie may be inserted to hold it in place. Such a button cannot, however, be used in front, as the head of the button would show over the bow, and in the back unless covered by an outside coat the button-head presents an ungainly appearance. Vith ladies shirtwaists these buttons are exceedingly unsightly, as such waists are ordinarily worn without a jacket, and consequently the collar and tie are fully exposed. It is therefore the purpose of my invention to provide a button which shall be so constructed that the tie may be securely and easily fastened in place and at the same time no portion of the button will be exposed. This I accomplish by my novel construction to be hereinafter pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my button. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
The collar-button itself consists of the usual circular'base a, with shank b and head cl. The outer half of this head, however, I elongate and bring to a point 0 of such degree of sharpness as readily to be made to puncture the inner fold of the tie and to conceal the entire head between the folds of the tie. To assist in holding the tie in place and to prevent its slipping off the pointed pin, I swell out the contour of the pin at f, so that the point having pierced the cloth the material can close behind the shoulder thus formed and be held securely. At the under side of the bend of the head I also leave the slit g, so that the edge of the cloth can pass up into this slit and be held smooth without gather ing. The sharpened portion of the head is also bent slightly. downward to insure its insertion only through the inner folds of the tie and to prevent injury to the person when in use, and the head 01 of the pin extends back over the base to hold the button in place.
It will be evident that my improved button can be used as well for the front as the back of the collar. This is of great advantage, as with many shapes of collar more difficulty is experienced with displacement of the tie in front than there is at the back.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A collar-button, provided with a base, shank and head, the outer half of which head is elongated horizontally to form a pointed pin, and said pin having an enlargement be* tween the head and point of pin to serve as a retainer for the tie, substantially as shown and described.
2. A collar-button, provided with a base, shank, and head, one portion of which head is elongated to form a pin, and said pin having an enlargement between the head and point of pin to retain the tie, and a recess between the base of the pin portion and the shank to receive the edge of the cloth secured by the pin, substantially as shown and described. v
