IMPROVEMENT IN SCAR F OR NECK-TIE HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,608, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES HAYDEN and WILLIAM H. HART, Jr., of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain improvements in Scarf-Shields, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention mainly consists in a novel shape of the edges of the shield, whereby a definite, neat, and correct form is given to the shield, as hereinafter described. It further consists in the construction of the shield with a tongue for the connection of the loop.
Figure l is a face view of the shield. Fig. 2 is an inside view of the same, having the tongue B provided with a loop, (J, bent up on the back of the shield A. Fig. 3 is a back view of the shield A and scarf D when finished. Fig. 4 is a front view of the same. Fig. 5 shows a modification in forming the tongue B.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, represent, respectively, front and'rear views of the scarf-shield, which is provided with a tongue, B, and loop 0. The tongue and shield may be cut in a single piece, or separately, and afterward fastened together by stitching or otherwise. The tongue has a hole, b, as seen in Fig. 1, through which the ends of the cord are passed and fastened by means of a knot. The tongue may be cut in the body of the shield, as shown in Fig. 5. E is a strip of linen pasted on the front of the shield A and tongue B, to strengthen the latter when bent up. When the shield A is made of a tough material the strip E is not needed. The shield A has curved edges 0 c and angle edges d d, which combine in giving a full rounded form to the shield, when the angles are brought together and confined, as seen in Fig. 3. The edges d d are of such angle as to give the desired taper to the lower end or knot of the shield; and the curved edges spread out upward to cause an expanded and flattened form, so as to bring the horns e 0 wide enough apart to catch well under the shirt collar and at the same time give the shield a neat appearance. The lower edge 9 of the shield A is curved out, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, in such a manner that when the angles at d are drawn together and connected the said edge 9 shall have a square appearance, as represented in the finished scarf, Figs. 3 and 4.
We claim as our invention- As an article of manufacture, a scarf or necktie holder, A, with or without the tongue B, (strengthened or not,) constructed substantially as shown and described.
