F. R. ALDRIDGE. DETACHABLE BUTTON. APPLICATION FILED APR. 18. m7.
Patented Sept. 4, 1917.

DETAGHAIBLE BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. a, M917.
Application filed April 18, 1917. Serial No. 162,841.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. AL- nnmen, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Buttons, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as detachable buttons for use as garment fastening devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and comparatively inexpensive; and which may be used in connection with trousers for suspender buttons or any other purpose, and which may also be used in connection with coats, vests and other garments. The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of'the views, and in which Figure 1 is a. view showing in section a piece of fabric with the button head of my improved detachable button device connected therewith Fig. 2 a similar view showing the complete device or button head and back member connected, and also showing the first step in securing the back member in position Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the second and last step for securing the back member in position;
Fig. 4 a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 a view looking in the direction of the arrow 6 of Fig. 2 but showing only the fastening device; and,
Fig. 7 a similar view looking in the direction of the arrow 7 of Fig. 3; and Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive are on a larger scale than Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
My improved fastening device comprises a button head member a and a back memher 6, and the button head member may be made in any desired manner, but in the con struction shown comprises a main body portion a provided with a central neck a having a pin a provided with a conical head a and in the use of my improved button or fastening device the pin a with its head a is adapted to be passed through a part c of a garment or a fabric substanceof any kind or class.
The back part 7) comprises, in the construction shown, a circular shell-shaped body 6 having a flat back 5 and a front 72* which is preferably convex, and the front o is provided, in the construction shown, with a central oblong opening Z2 having an inwardly'directed rim 7). The back 6 of the back member I) of the fastening device is provided with a central circular opening 6 through which the pin a and its head a may be passed, and a slide plated is mounted in the back member Z) and radially movable through one side of the rim portion thereof, and said slide plate is provided in its inner end portion with a longitudinal central slot 62?, and a spring tongue (Z is cut from the material of the slide plate in forming the slot d and folded backwardly onto said slide plate, and the end of which is provided with a projecting lip (Z in wardly of which the side edge portions of said tongue are recessed to form a narrow neck J.
The inner end portion of the slide plate (Z is wider than the outer end portion thereof, as shown at d", and this forms shoulders (Z at the opposite side edges of the slide plate d and centrally thereof to limit the outward movement of said slide plate, and the opposite corners of the enlarged inner end portion of the slide plate are out radially as shown at (Z and bent to form guide lips (Z which operate in connection with the rim member I) to guide the slide plate cl in its inward movement.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement. The normal position of the separate parts when the device is not in use, as well as when said device is in use, is shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 7, and in order to connect the device with a garment as shown in Fig. 3, the back member b is detached, this operation being effected by engaging the lip d of the spring tongue 65 of the slide member and forcing said spring tongue back against the plate (Z and then pulling said member into the position shown in Figs. 2, i and 6. This operation, as above stated, disconnects the separate parts of the device, after which the button" head member a is connected with the garment by passing the pin a and its head a therethrough, after which the pin a and its head a are passed into the back of the back member 6 of the fastening device, or said back is passed on over said pin and its head, after which the tongue (Z of the slide member is forced backwardly into the position shown in Fig. 4E, and said slide member isiorced inwardly into the position shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 7, and in this operation the pin a passes into the slot (Z and the separate parts of the device are securely locked together, and said parts of the device may be disconnected and said device detached from the garment at any time by reversing the above operation.
The above operation is made possible by reason of the fact that the slot 0 in the rim portion of the back member I) through which the plate (Z of the slide member passes is provided at one side with an angular enlargement e in which the body portion of the spring tongue (Z operates, and said angular enlargement e is provided with a central extension 6 in whichthe neck portion (Z of said spring tongue operates.
My improved fastening device may be 1 made of any preferred material and of any desired size, and changes in and modifications of the details of construction herein shown and described may 'be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. A detachable button device comprising a head member and a back member the head member being provided centrally of one side thereof with a pin having an enlarged and pointed head, and the back member being provided centrally of one side thereof with an opening to receive said pin and its head, said back member being also provided with a radially movable slide having a slot at its inner end to receive said pin, and means whereby said slide may be operated and locked in its innermost position.
2. A detachable button device of the class described, comprising a head portion provided centrally of its back with a neck having a projecting pin provided with a pointed head and a back member comprising a shell-shaped device the back of which is provided with a central opening to receive said pin and its head, said back member being also provided with a radially arranged slide movable through one side part thereof and provided at its inner end with a central longitudinal slot to receive said pin, said back member and said slide being also provided with means for guiding said slide in its inward movement, and means for locking said slide in its innermost position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 17th day of April 1917.
Vitnesses C. E. MULREANY, P. E. THOMPSON.
