1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD R.v WARNER, or sA FRANCISCO, oALIFo NIA.
NECKTIE- HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 280,694, dated July 3, 1883.
- Application filed February 24, 1883. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have made and invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Scarf and Tie Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saidimprovement, the accompanying drawings being referred to by figures and letters.
The object of my invention is to provide a holding-plate and retaining device for neck scarfs and ties, by means of which a small piece or length of silk or other suitable material can be readily and quickly made into the form of a scarf or a bow without requiring any sewing or stitching of parts together.
To such end and purpose it consists in forming and producing a plate of luniform shape by cutting or stamping it out of thin sheet metal and bending it to the required curve to fit the neck, and then cutting both at and along the top and bottom edges a curved slot in such manner that a narrow strip or portion of metal is provided for nearly the entire length of the plate at the top as well as at the bottom. In the center portion of this blank an opening with a narrow slot leading from one side is formed to receive the head of the shirt stud or button by which the plate is retained in place. \Vith the aid of such a plate a scrap of any material can be formed into a bow or a scarf that will have all the semblance of a made-up article. The following description fully explains my said invention and the manner in which I proceed to make, apply, use, and operate it.
In the said drawings herein referred to, Figure 1 is a view of the plate. Fig. 2 shows its use as .a scarf-holder. Figs. 3 and 4. illustrate themanner of forming a bow.
A represents a plate that may be readily cut out of thin sheet metal of suitable size to extend across the front of the opening between the edges of a collar, its ends beinglong enough to take under the collar or both sides, and its top and bottom edges being cut on curves that approach each other at the ends, so that th plate takes a luniform shape.
At a distance above the lower curved edge a slot, B, is produced by cutting out a portion of the metal along its lower margin in such manner as to produce a slot on the same or approaching the same curve as the lower edge.
In like manner a curved slot, 0, is formed at ting in a slit, which constitutes a fastening 'means.
This plate is then bent to conform to the required curvature of the neck, and it is then ready for use.
In forming a scarf by the aid of thisholder, one end of the material is passed through the upper slot from behind, so that the remaining part is brought over the top of the plate to the front and covers the upper edge. The first end, I), may then be placed through the lower slot for better securing it. The two parts may be attached together by a pin or ring, or worn without. To form a bow, the two ends of a short piece of material are passed through the slots from behind, as shown in Fig. 3, and the ends I) c are then crossed behind the loop (I and drawn out at opposite sides. One of these ends, as b, is then returned through the loop d and drawn to form a bow end, as e, and the other end, as c, is passed in the same manner in the opposite direction to produce the other half, f, of the bow. In this manner the bow is produced without tying, or requiring any knots or fastenings of any kind.
Among the advantages derived from using this plate are facility in forming and attaching scarfs and bows and great economy in the use of material.
Having-thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described scarf and tie holder, consisting of the plate A, of luniform shape, having the curved slots B O at the top and the bottom, and the locking-slot D in the center portion to receive a stud or button, substantially as set forth.
EDWARD B. WVARNER.
