No.66|,425. Patented Nov. 6, !900. w; n. REDINGTON.
CUIWBIHD NECKTIE HOLDER AND COLLAB AND CUFF FASTENER.
Application filed Mar. 8, 1899.\ Hamadan) rren AThT rrinin XVTTJARD D. REDINGTON, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
COMBINED NECKTIE-HOLDER AND COLLAR AND CUFF FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION 'forming' part of Letters Patent No. 661,&25, dated. November 6, 190.
Application filed March 8, 1899.
To all whom, it may concern- Be it known that I, WILLARD D. REDING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamtou, in the county of Broone and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Shirt and Shirt-XVaist Neckband Fastener, Col1ar-Fastener, Cu ff-Fastener, and Necktie- Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertans to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to produce a combined shirt and shirt-waist neckband fastener, collar-'fastener, cuff-fastener, and necktie-holder made without hinges, pivot, solid neck plate or base, solid shank, hook, or button to wear the fabric or chafe or blister the skin of the neck or wrist where brought in contact with same, which shall be so constructed as to adapt it to shirts or shirt-waists opening either front or back or both front and back, front buttonhole ends or back center buttonholes of collar, buttonhole ends of cufits lapped over as a shank-fastener or together as a link-fastener, and to hold collarband of necktie from slipping sidewise or up on collar.
I am of course aware that various styles of collar-buttons have been devised. So far as I am aware they have all been open to defects in Construction, which make them more or less subject to objection. Prominent among the objections offered is that of the thick cumbersorneuncomfortable solid metal, bone,
horn, or celluloid neck-base, which if thick enough to be strong and serviceable is uncomfortable and often irritates or makes the neck sore, besides having sharp edges to wear the fabric. If thin enough to overcome these objections, the base, if metal, presents a sharp cutting edge, or if of other substance is too Weak to give service, and still has the prime ohjection of a large contacting surface. These objections are all overcome by my wire neekbase, which has none of the objections cited above.
In the accompanying drawings, forning part of this specification, Figure l is a view of my novel combined neckband,co1lar, cuff, and necktie-holder as a whole. This invention comprises a looped tongue A, connecting with twin shanks B, terminating in a semi- Seria1No.'708,2Z9. (No model.)
circular neck-base C. d represents the retaining-shoulders of the tongue A, and e ethe retaining-shoulders of the neck-base O.
Fig. 2 shows a side view.of the invention.
Fig. 3 shows the device as applied to a cuff.
i shows a collar with a View of the neek-base C in position in the rear, and the tongue in front showing the office of the shoulders din holding the outside lap of front of co llar in position.
Fig. 5 shows a sectional view of rear of collar and necktie-band as the latter is held in position when placed under the tongue A after the tongue is in the buttonhole.
The essential features of ny new and novel collar and cuff fastener and necktie-holder are the looped tongue with tip slightly turned upward, as shown in Fig. 2, which affords easy passage through the buttonholes, preventing stretching of the same and acting as a hook under which the band of the necktie may be passed to prevent its working up on the collar, the twin shanks, which present a snooth wearing-surface and prevent the device from tu rning in the buttonholes, and the senicircular neck-base, which prevents irritation of the skin and avoids the appearance of the neck base above the upper edge of the neckband of shirt or collar in front, made from one piece of wire of any desired size or metal possessingspring, strength, and smoothness, the final ends of which are brazed or soldered together to form a snooth strong joint.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The herein-described collar and cuff fastener and necktie-holder made of one piece of wire bent so as to form a substantially senicircular neck-base provided with shoul` ders e, e, and the twin shanks B projecting outward from said neck-base, the tongue A provided with the retaiuing-shoulders d, d, and slightly bent outward, downward and then Upward between the retaining-shoulders CZ, d, and its point, yet remaining substantially parallel with the cock-base, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony Whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLARD D. REDINGTON.
