TO LL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I,"WILLIAM A. LAVERTY, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Holder for Cravats, &c.; and I d o hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in thcart to make and use the same, reference being had to thel accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
rlhe present invention relates to that class of holdersfor cravats, 85e., which are constructed with a crotch to fit or set over the front button of the shirt; and it consists in providing said crotch with an elastic or ilexible band that is stretched across the'same, from one side tothe other, where at each end it is fixed, and in such manner that by said band or cord, when placed over the shirt button, the holder will be so `held. thereon that it can be brought to the best possible position to enable it to be properly placed, by its side wingsor arms, under the turned-over portions of the shirt collar, the importance and advantage of which will be hereinafter stated. In the accompanying plate of drawings lmy improved holder for cravats, &c., is illustrated- Figurel being a front view of the holder, as applied to and worn in connection witha turned-over collar; and
Figure 2, a View of the back or rear side of the holder, showing a cravnt or neck-tie secured to it.
Similarietters of reference indicate like parts. i
A, in the drawings, represents a holder for cravats,&c., of that class of such holders to which the present; invention, as hereinafter stated, refers. This holder can be made of sheet metal, of any desired kind, or of vulcanized India rubber or gutta percha, or of paste or card-board, or of any other suitable .inateriah and is provided with two side wings, or arms, B, which in the direction of their length have a' curvilinear or circular shape, and a crotch, C, formed by the two arms or prongs, D, constituting the lower portion of the holder; E, an elastic or flexible cord or band, extending across the opening or crotch C of the holder, from one prpng to the other, forming the same; this cord being seclircd at each end in such prongs by tying or linotting it, or in any other suitable manner. The body of the holder A is provided with a series of holes or apertures, a, to enable a cravat or other similar article of wearing apparel to be secured to it by sewing or stitching or in any other proper manner. For the wearing of the holder, provided with an elastic cord D, across its crotch, it is first placed by such cord upon the front button of the shirt, when pull down the holder suiciently to allow its side wings to be the more readily inserted or forced or placed under the folded-over portions of the collar, after which adjust the holder to its position with reference to the collar; the elastic cord, as shown in tig. 1, then being looped or bent over the button.
By using an elastic cord, in combination with the holder A, in the manner above explained, it is plainly apparent that, first, while the holder is held or sustained with suicient firmness in its position, the elasticity of the cord renders it much more easy and comfortable to the wearer, and besides has no tendency to cut or sever the threads by which the bottom is secured to the shirt; a desideratum of much importance.
Cravat-holdcrs which are supported by an elastic" loop passing over the button,V as heretofore made, are not provided with a crotch or opening for the button, but, on the contrary, the plate or retainer `passes over the button whilethc elastic passes over the-button behind the plate.A Retainers so constructed are pushed outward by the contact of the button with them, and are thus prevented from setting flat upon the neck and under the collar, the edges which come in contact with the edges of the collar, in the case of metallic retainers, soon cutting and destroying the collar. i
In in v improvement, that part of the retainer which would come in contact with-the button is cut away, leaving a crotch or opening, C, which permits the retainer to set latly upon the neck and under the collar, and also permits the button to protrude through instead of pressing against the retainer. l
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y The plate, provided with an elastic cord E, secured'to the arms D, which form the crotch C, retaining the pla-tc against the neck and allowing the button to protrude through the crotch whileresting on the elastic, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 20th day of Dece1nber, `1866.`
' `WM. A. LAVERTY.
