MARIANNE WATT SUTIIERLAND, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
SHIRT-WAIST ADJUSTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .MARIANNE IVATT SUTHERLAND, a British subject, residing at INaterbury, in the county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Grist Adjusters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a shirt waist adjuster and is more particularly adapted for use with ladies shirt waists or the like apparel.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a shirt waist adjuster including a strip of resilient material bent on itself to form a flexible loop for attachment to an arm seam of a shirt waist and a yieldable extension to be attached to the shoulder seam intersecting the arm hole seam and the neck portion of said shirt waist or other garment.
Heretofore in shirt waists or other garments the shoulder portions thereof and the sleeves connected to the arm hole portions in the body of the garment assume a drooping effect and thus gives to the wearer of the shirt waist a narrow appearance across the shoulders whereas, by the application of the adjuster forming the subject matter of this invention, by applying the same to the shoulder seams and the arm hole seams of the shirt waist will produce a wide shoulder effect to the shirt waist and at the same time will prevent the shoulder portions of the said shirt waist and its sleeves from drooping or sagging.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention which to enable those skilled in the art to practice the invention, will be set forth at length in the following descri tion while the novelty of the invention will be included in the claim succeeding said description.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a front view of a shirt waist showing the front thereoi' broken away with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view of a portion of a shirt waist containing the adjuster.
Fig. 3 is a further fragmentary view Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 435,801.
of the shirt waist showing the shoulder portion and sleeve with their seams at the inner lace thereof and having the adjuster connected thereto. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the shirt waist adjuster detached l'rom a shirt waist.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a shirt waist of the conventional form and is merely shown [or the purpose of illustration whereby the adjuster may be carried into practice and clearly illustrated, and said waist has the usual shoulder scams 6 and arm hole seams 7 for connecting the sleeve 8 to the garment. For the sake of convenience the invention is shown and will be hereinal'ter described as applied to only one shoulder and arm hole seam however, it is to be understood that the said invention is to be applied to both shoulder seam portions and arm hole seams when in actual practice.
Secured to the shoulder seam 6 by stitches 9 which p ass through openings 0 is a resilient strip of material such as a narrow celluloid or pearl bone 10, the opposite ends of which are connected to the extremities of said seam 6 and which strip 10 is of the same length and coextensive with the shoulder seam 6 so as to hold the latter and adjacent material of the shirt waist taut or distended. Surrounding the arm hole and lying contiguous with its seam 7 is a resilient strip of material 11. corresponding to the said strip 10 and which strip 11 circumscribes the arm hole of the shirt waist 5 and has a plurality of openings 12 receiving stitches 13 which connect the said strip 11 to the arm hole seam and stitches 14 pass through terminal openings 15 in the strip 10 and said strip 11 whereby the said strips are flexibly connected to each other at their point of juncture, and in this manner lree llexibilityol' the strips is a'il'orded without the least discomfort to the wearer of the garment. Furthermore, by the particular attachment of the strips to the shoulder and arm hole seams of the shirt waist it is clearly apparent that the shoulder portion of the garment will present broad shoulder effect and the sleeve of said shirt waist will be prevented from clinging to the wearer ol the shirt waist and also overcome sagging and drooping of said garment over the shoulder.
What is claimed is A shirt waist adjuster comprising a narrow strip of resilient material bent to form a ring corresponding to the diameter of an arm hole portion of a shirt waist and secured thereto at intervals, and a resilient narrow strip of material conneeted to said ring and 10 adapted to be attached to the shoulder por tion of a shirt waist.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
