ED. STATES ROBERT E. LOWE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,912, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed July 25, 1899.
T0 or whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. LOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, (Brooklyn,) State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in garments; and its object is to provide a garment having a tight-fitting underwaist or corset lining which is readily detachable from the garment.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a view showing a portion of the waist-lining attached to the dress. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the underwaist detached. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion of a waist. Fig. 4. is a view showing a-modified form of attachment. Fig. 5 is a section through a welt.
Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A is a dress, wrapper, or other garment opening in the front, as shown, and provided along the underarm and shoulder seams with a welt or strip B, provided, preferably, with buttons 0 or other suitable fastoning means. This welt is sewed, preferably, over the edges of the seam and therefore is permitted to flex within the dress at any desired angle thereto without changing the outward appearance of the garment. Detachably secured to the welts on each side of the dress is half of an underwaist or corset D, provided along its inner edges with suitable fastening means, as buttonholes E, for engagement with the fasteners upon the welts. By this construction a garment is obtained having a loose front and provided with a cor-.

set-lining which will fit snugly to the wearer, such lining being detachable, as when it is desirable to wash the dress, thus obviating the necessity of removing the bones from the waist, as has been necessary heretofore. It is obvious also that these corsets or waistlinings may be removed and others substituted when desired.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a modified form of connection between the underwaist and the welts, a cord or lace F being used, as shown.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; butI do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention. It is obvious that in lieu of the welts buttonholes may be formed in the seam edges, thereby permitting the underwaist portions to be secured directly thereto.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture a garment having a welt at each of the side seams and projecting beyond said seam, and an adjustable lining detachably secured to said welts.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a garment having welts overlapping and secured to the edges of the side and shoulder seams, a corset-lining, and means for detachably securing the lining to the welts, said lining formed of two parts having suitable adj usting means and each cut out to form part of the neck and armholes of the garment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. LOWE.
