Application inea Decemter 1, i914.- p semaine. 874,965.
To all whom t may concern: Y Y y u Be itknown that I, RALPH R. 'Jan'nsfa citizen ofthe United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, inthe-city andState of New York, have invented c'zertainy new and useful Improvements in Undergarinent's", of which the following -is a full, clear, and complete description. y Y a y invention relatesl to undergarments, such as vests, union suits, etc. l
The object of my invention'is the production of an undergarment which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and,-
comfortable and convenient in use. A more specific object 0f my invention is the pro-V duction of an undergarment which will be 'of great convenience as a maternity or nursing garment. y
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a front view of a garment embodying my invention, the breast flap being closed over the breast opening.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, but showing the breast flap open. Y
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing a slightly modified garment.
The garment 1, which may be made in any suitable manner is provided with the customary neck opening 2. In order to form the breast opening I cut two diagonal slits in the front of the garment extending from the point 3 at or slightly below the center of the front edge of the neck opening to the points 4, 5 respectively. If the point 3 be below the neck opening a vertical cut is made from the point 3 to the neck opening, so that in any event the breast opening communicates at its apex with the neck opening.
In forming this triangular breast opening by cutting the slits 3 4. 3-5, there is formed also a triangular flap 3', 4, 5, integral at its base with the garment, and adapted to cover the breast opening when desired. Y
I provide means such as the button 6 and its buttonliole to hold the garment together at the point of communication of the neck and breast openings, when desired. This button will generally be buttoned when the garment is being worn, and will be unbuttoned to provide a large opening by theA buttonholes 7", 8, the latter. being formed inthe sides of theflap 35,' 4, 5*. The`butspectively whiclirare sewed tothe garment Specicatonfof Letters Patent.'` Patented at the apex ofthe flap3, 4 5, to hold the vposition comprise the buttons 7, 8, and their Atons 7, 8, are secured to thegussets-9, 10, rel at lthe sideedgesof thebreastopening to in- Sie@ the. e'omrleteelesefe 0f this? Opening' by the flap.
If desired, also, gussets `1,1, 412,may besecured-to the sides 3f-4, and 3-5 of the flap, in which case the buttons 7, 8, may be secured in any desired position on the gussets 9, 10, or the garment itself, and the butlonholes 7 8 may be formed in the gussets It is evident that the slits 3-4 and 3-5, need not be straight, but may be curved or irregular as conditions may require.`
The ease of manufacture of my improved garment is apparent from the above. Assuming the garment to be provided with the sleeves, and with the neck opening, all that is necessary to complete it is to cut the slits 3 4, 3-5, sewing on the gussets 9, 10 (and 11, 12, if the latter are to be used), sew on the buttons 6, 7 8. and make the necessary buttonholes. If it is desired to apply a braid such as is illustrated at 13, this may be done in a single sewing operation using a single continuous piece of braid, starting, for vin- Y stance, from the point 3 (see Fig. 2) and 5 3. It is to be noted also that no facings Y are used in the manufacture of this garment. The fact that the number of operationsrequired in the manufacture of my garment is reduced to a minimum is very important, since the labor expense thus saved constitutes a very large item when the garments are manufactured in quantity. Y
One of the great advantages of my improved garment is the very large opening that results from unbuttoning of button 6, so that the garment may be put on and taken ofi' over the feet,as well as over the head.
This is especially important when my invenf tion is applied to union garments which must be put von and taken off over the feet.
Another marked advantage of my improved garment is its adaptation for use as a maternity or nursing garment. Vhen used for this purpose either breast may be exposed by unbuttoning one or vthe other of the buttons 7, 8, Without exposing any other part of the Wearers body.
The fact that no facings are usedinthis garment, adds to the comfort of the wearer as Well fas t0 the lease Vof manufacture.
Also the comfort of the wearer is insured by the fact that the buttons which hold the garment snugly in position are all above the Corset of the wearer.
I claim;
l. An undergarment having a neck opening, a triangular breast opening communicating at its apex with the neck opening, gussets secured to the garment along the side Vedges of the lbreast opening, a triangular flap adapted to coversaid breast opening. and'means for detachably securing the sides of said aps toA said gussets whereby atight Copies of this patent maybe' obtained' for ve cents each, by addre closure is obtained Without restricting the fullness of the garment.
2. AAn undergarment, havinga neck opening, a triangular breast opening, communicating at its apex With the neck opening, gussets secured to the garment along the edges of the breast opening, a triangular flap, the base of which is permanently secured to the garment at the base of the breast opening, means for detachably securing the apex of said Hap tothe garment at the Yapex O- .the breast opening. and means for detaohab'ly securing .the sides of said flap .tosaid ygussets, ywhereby a .tight closure is obtained Without restricting the fullness 4of the garment.
RALPH R. JANES.
