UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTHA JANE BEERS, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BATHlNG-GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,171, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed May 7, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MART A J ANE BEERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathing-Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying d rawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bathing-garments; and it consists, essentially, in forming the body and skirt in one piece, while the legs are made separate but attached thereto, the whole when completed forming an integral garment, to be more fully hereinafter described.
The drawings accompanying this specifica tion represent in Figure 1 the garment on the wearer, and Fig. 2 a front view of a bathinggarment embodying my invention.
In the drawings, A represents the entire finished article; but it will be noticed that this particular garment is cut and formed in a manner heretofore not generally adopted in garments for similar purposes, as the body or waist B is formed integral with the skirt, that the weight may be borne more by the shoulders than by the hips. If by the latter alone in order to uphold the skirt and legs when made separately from the waist, undue weight comes upon the hips, and it is necessary to secure the material composing the same very tightly together, which is a great objection where freedom of movement of the body is required, as in bathing. This waist B is formed integral with the skirt 0, while the legs D D are cut of the usual shape, and, in lieu of being an independent separable garment, are con nected in the manner shown in the drawings and integral therewith.
It will be seen that the waistband a of the legs D D is entire, and attached for about onethird or more of its length, b, and at the rear to the lower back portion of the body B, where the skirt in ordinary cases joins the body of the garment. This manner of attaching the legs leaves the front flaps, c 0, of the body B loose, open, and facilitates putting it on, and are to be buttoned closely together when the garment is in use. In addition I have provided the waistband a with a running tape or cord, (2, for the purpose of gathering the loose port-ions or fullness of the waistband a nicely about the hips, and giving more form and better fit of the garment to the person of the wearer, and I have done away with buttons and button-holes now generally in use.
Supposing the garment unbuttoned, the wearer who desires to put it on proceeds as follows: Having drawn on the legs D D first, the arms are then inserted into the sleeves,
and the cord (1 is pulled until the fullness of the waistband is overcome, and the size of the latter acconnnodates itself to the waist of the wearer.
The advantage of this garment is the ease and facility with which the wearer puts it on and takes it off.
.The objection of buttons on the leg portion D D of the garment is obviated by the gatheringband d, and by atlaclunent of the latter to the body B most of the weight is transferred from the hips to thesl1oulders,although the hips assume some of it, owing to the gathering of the waistband about them. Moreover, there is no trouble in having the parts mislaid, lost, or used by some one else, as each garment is complete and entire in itself.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A bathinggarment consisting solely of a body and shirt in one piece, in combination with the leg'portion attached directly thereto at the waist of said piece forming the body and skirt.
2. The combination of the body B and skirt 0, in one piece, with the legs D D and the gatheringband d,- said band being attached to said body, and sewing to gather in the waist of the leg portion of the garment.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
