To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM (J. POWELL, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to provide a two-piece garment consisting of a coat part and a trouser part so constructed with relation one to the other that the coat part or the trousers part may be separately worn; or they may be Worn together in such manner as to give the appearance of an ordinary suit; or they may be worn with the coat tucked inside at the waist to give a blouse effect; or they may be worn with either the front or back of the coat part tucked into the pants part while either the back or the front of the coat part is worn on the inside, the garment being self-supporting, i. 6., not requiring the use of susponders.

Again it is an object of the invention to provide a garment of the foregoing character which will not bind in the back and will permit easy bending over without danger of tearing the parts.

The invention also resides in those novel details of construction and combination of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a View illustrating the invention in use, the garment being worn with the coat part out giving the appearance of an ordinarysuit. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the belt strap secured at the front and passed through the belt loops of the coat. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1 showing the garment worn with the coat tucked in, both front and back to give a blouse effect. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the ease with which the rear portion of the trousers part can be let down. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view looking into the trousers part from the back toward the front and's'howing the button-hole strips sewn into the front of the trousers part at the waistine. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation showing the unbroken or unopened back of the coat part.

. In the drawings, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 represents the trousers part. which is provided with the usual front opening or fly 2, and side openings or flies 5, the openings 2 and 5 extending from the waist-line downwardly to about a position in horizontal alinement with the crotch. The back of the trousers part is provided with belt loops 3 and 4. through which the belt 2% is adapted to be passed. The flies 2 and 5 have button and button-hole connections 67 by means of which they may be closed together.

8 designates the hip pockets of the trousers part and 9 designates the front pockets which open at the sides in the usual manner.

10 designates belt loops on the front of the trousers part through which the belt strap 24 is adapted to be passed when the trousers part is worn separately or when worn with the coat part tucked in at the front.

11 designates button-hole strips which are sewn into the front of the trousers part at the waist-line and have button-holes 12 to receive the buttons 23 on the front of the coat part.

The coat part is composed of the back section 19 and the two front sections 13, the latter being sewed to the back section 19 along the sides from the waist-line upwardly, but disconnected therefrom to provide side slits 20 from the waist-line downwardly. The front sections 13 of the coat part have button and button-hole connec tions 1s1-l5 from the waist-line. upwardly and are provided with suitable pockets 16, as may be desired, The coat part of the garment extends downwardly from the waistline to form a back skirt portion 21 and front skirt portions l7, the purpose of which will be apparent later. The front sections 13 of the coat part are provided with belt loops 18, at the waist-line through which the belt 24: is adapted to be passed when the garment is worn as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

23 designates buttons secured in a horizontal row to the front sections 13 of the coat part, at the vaist-line, to button into the button-holes 12 of the pants part when the front skirt parts 17 are tucked into the trousers part, as best shown in Figs. 8 and 9. The coat part, it should be understood, may be provided with the usual sleeves 2:2 and collar 26, when desired and the belt 24 is adapted to be buckled at to secure the ends of the same together, in the usual mannor.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided. a tam-niece garment, either piece of which may be separately worn, or when. the two parts are worn together, the coat part may have the skirt extensions 21-17 tucked in. at the waist-line to give a blouse effect, as shown in Fig. 3, or they may be worn outside, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to give a coat effect. By providing the slits 20, the belt 2 can be passed through the back loops 3 and 4. of the trousers part and the front loops 18 of the coat part when the garment is worn as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or the belt can be passed entirely through the trousers loops 3, 4t and 10 when the garment is worn as shown in Fig. 3..

The 'belt can be passed through the trousers loops 3, l: and 10 when the front skirt sections 17 of the coat part are tucked in and the rear skirt part 21 left out, as it will be obvious that either the front or the back skirt sections may be separately worn tucked in, if desired. It will also be observed that there is provided no fastenings between the back of the coat part and the back of the part so as to leave the garment flexible at the back and allow bending over without danger of tearing the garment or putting undue strains on the back of the wearer. When the front of the coat part is tucked in at the waist-line and the trousers part buttoned thereto, the garment YflYQS the appearance of a union suit and may be worn a union suit.

The construction is obviously adapted for overalls or jumpers and may be adapted to under-garments and. others as well, and I therefore do not. wish to limit, myself to the use of the invention on jumpers or overalls.

6. In a garment, a trousers part having a front opening and side openings extend ing downwardly from the waist-line, fasteningyineans for holding the garment to close the respective openings, means at the waistline for holding the garment to the body of the wearer, and button-hole strips secured within the front of the garment at the waistline.

7. In a garment, a coat part having side slits extending from the waist-line downwardly to the bottom to separate the coat part at the sides from the Waist-line downwardly, said coat part having a horizontal row of buttons at the waistline at the front and having belt strap loops on the front, combined with a trousers part, said trousers part having side openings extending from the waist-line downwardly to about the hips, means for securing said trousers 1321' t to hold said side openings closed, and a button strip secured within the trousers part at the waist-line in front to coiiperate with the coat part'buttons when the front of the coat part is tucked in, said coat part adapted to be wholly tucked into the trousers part or to have either the front or the back of the coat pa rt tucked into the trousers part or to have both the front and the back of the coat sers section having side and front flies, said T coat part adapted to be wholly tucked into the trousers, or wholly worn outside of the trousers or worn with either the front or the bark of the coat part tucked into the tron-- sers, a button-hole strip secured at the front 1 A wranged substantially as shown and for the gnu-poses described.
