Ble it known that I, VILLIAM C. POWEIL, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union Garments, of which the following 1s a specification.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved union garment which ma be made up as over-alls, night suit, wor clothes or other similar garment, the invention being, however, y, especially useful when applied to over-alls for remen, automobile users and others requiring a dustproof garment so constructed as to permit great freedom of motion of the body, agid one which can be easily put on and taken off and held on the rson without the employmentof suspen ers or the like.

In its general nature, the invention resides in providing a garment in which the trousers and body sections are united into one structure along the front half of the waist line (or if desired, the entire :front of the garment mayl be made -in two pieces, a right and a left), the front of the garment opening u ,from the crotch to the neck and provided with buttons and button holes to close the opening, the rear or seat portion of Vthe trousers section being unconnected ,with the back of the jacket or body section from hip to hip, the trousers section being opened down the side fromthewaist line to a point about in alinement with the crotch, the back of the jacket having a Skirt so designed as to be tucked in beneath the seat of the trousers section and lie flat against the bod or it 4may be left out and when left out the skirt is of a len h sufficient to cover the opening in the hip `ockets when such are employed, means eing also provided. for securing the trousers Section snugly against the body of the user the side openings of the trousers Section and the front .opening of the garment being provided with flaps, buttons and button holes to enable the same to be closed.

In its more subordinate nature, the invention also includes-those novel details of construction, combination and arranoement of arts, au of which will be first fa'iiy descri d, then be specicall pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Wl1ichi Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my invention in use in one of its forms the upper button as an over-all. In the drawings, in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 is the trousers section of the garment which is usually made in four4 pieces, the front of the trousers section being permanently secured to the front of the body section, by suitable stitching, as at 20, or made integral therewith, as shown in Figs. 7 and 9. The front of the body section consists of two half parts 13-14 (see Fig. 1), corresponding to the two half parts of the Ifront of the trousers section, and the trousers section and body section are opened up, the front, as at l2, from the crotch to the neck opening, and provided with suitable butitons and button holes to close the opening in the usual manner. The back trousers sections 2 are sewn at 3 tothe front sections from the bottom of the leg upwardly to a place 4 about in alinement with the crotch, and from that point 4 to the point 5 y at the Waist line, the front and back parts of the trousers section are left unsewn but are secured by buttons and button holes 7, 8 and button 1 0. ton 10, and the point 4, and just below the bottom of the mouth of the side pocket ot the garment, to leave an opening 6 between the button 'Z and the point 4, and the opening between the mouth 9 of the pocket 11 and the flap of the seat portion of the trousers section through which the band of the user may be insertedy to get at the pockets of the under garments. 'lhe jacket or body 1o portion of the garment is composed of two front portions 13e-14C, shaped to lit, and the back 16, which may also be made in two parts sewn together, however, to form an' integralsstructure, the back 16 being sewn along `the sides 15 t0 the front sections 13-14:, from the top down to the point 5 at the waist line, the back 16 being continued below the waist line to form a skirt 24 which forms one of the essentials of my present 20 invention, the skirt 24 being of a length sui'icient to project over the mouths of the hip pockets 23, when such are used, and the skirt` 24 is left to lap on the outside, o r the skirt may be tucked in, as shown in Fig. 2, 25 to lie smoothly against the seat portion of the garment and against the wearer.

ln order to hold the trousers section of the garment in piace and relieve any supportmg weight. om the shoulders, a belt 30 22, or its equivalent, is provided, the trousers section of the garment vhaving suitable loops or belt guides 21, through -which the belt is adapted to pass. The sleeves 25- are made either with button ends, as shown in 3.3 Fig. 1 or in any other desired way.

I have indicated several modifications of the means by which the trousers sectionof the garment may be supported, and by reference to Fig. 6, one of those modicatuions L 4o will be apparent. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the belt 22x,is in the nature otfa half belt and extends around the front halt` of the garmentJ only, it being secured to the buttons 27, while a band 22a is secuerd in the waist line'of the back or seat portion of the trousers section."

ln the modification shown in Fig. 7, the half belt 21- is secured tolthe front of the trousers section and is buckled in back.

ln the modifications shown in'Fig. 10, the desired holding is acquired by means of short `buckle and strap members 32, arranged at intervals around the waist line, preterably entirely in the back of the garment.

In the form shown in Fig. 11, the belt is in the nature ont an elastic band that may be tied or otherwise secured in the h'ont, while in the modication shown in Fig. 12, the securing member 28, that passes through the loops 21X, is in the nature of a ta e.

ln the modification shown in Fig. 13, the belt member sections' 29*1 are integrally formed with the seat portion of the trousers section either as an integral part or sewn permanently thereto in order to term an integral structure.

ln the modification shown in Fig. 14, the belt holding loops v21y are formed with the back of the trousers section, and bent over and secured by suitable buttons or fasteners 212.

',llhe essential characteristics of my invention, ll desire it understood, is the making of the garment with the front opening from the crotch to the neck, and the seat portion of the trousers section openin at the sides so as to be let down, the back o` the eoat'section being provided with a skirt capable of being either tucked in or left out over the back in such a manner as to cover the hip pocket openingsv or to give a coat or a blouse eect, as desired, the garment being supported at the waist by a belt or other equivalent similar arrangement, such as disclosed in l"the drawing whereby the weight of the trousers part of the garment may be carried at thel waist and not at the shoulders so as to enable the wea-fer to have free movements of the'body without straining the garment 90 or-interfering with the users actions. l

Fig. 14 shows the collar 17 which is another important eature of the complete suit, since it may be butt-oned tighter about the neck by reason of the button arrangement 95 shown, or it may be turned entirely up to give complete protection from dust or the elements. Y

l am aware that heretofore a Patent No. 605,236 has been issued to one C. G. Smith, Junev7, 1898, which, at rst glance, might appear, to Vone not skilled in the art, as similar to my construction, and l do not 105 desire to be understood as claiming a garment such as is shown and described in the Smith patent. My garment diders from the Smith arment in many essential characteristics w ich will be clearly apparent to those 110 skilled in the art and which need not, l believe, be here fully set out.l

From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the complete construction, design,

arrangement and advantages of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art.

What l claim is 1.
