SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,676, dated June 6, 1905.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK Gnonen DODSHON, a citizen of the United States, re-

siding at Detroit, in the county of. Wayne and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improvement in overalls; and 1t conslsts 1n the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the best form 1n which I have contemplated embodying myinvention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.

Referring to the said drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a pair of overalls embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the front unbuttoned and thrown down, and Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view of the. garment.

In manufacturing this class of garments on -a commercial scale to be sold at the lowest pospense with the customary fly or open front,

which adds considerably to the cost of manufacture and detracts from the appearance of the garment, especially after considerable wear, and which impairs the durability of the overalls by reason of the fact that the fiy-securing buttons become detached and the buttonholes worn out or torn.

In carrying out my invention I construct the usual apron portion of the overalls as a separate piece from the front, the latter being stopped at the waist-line and the apron being united to the garment by being stitched at each side between the front and back sections.

In the drawings I have shown the best form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, in which A represents the waist portion of the front section of the overalls extending from the waist downward and provided with the front leg portions a a. I prefer to-form this entire front piece of one piece of material, as it adds to the simplicity ofthe garment; but it may be formed of more than one piece, if preferred. At each side of the I upper. edge of the waist portion I provide buttonholes a a. The upper edge of thewaist portion A is also provided in the center with a hook 0 as shown in Fig. 2.

B represents the waist and seat portion of the back section of the overalls, preferably made in two pieces to provide the necessary fullness in the seat portion and having the back leg portions 6 b. The front and back pieces of the garment are united by the outside seams, which extend from the hip down to the end of the leg portions, and by the inside seams, which extend from the crotch portion to the end of the leg portions. The back waist portion is provided at each side with a fasteningbutton 6 b. I

O represents the apron-section, which is a separate piece adapted to extend up over the chest of the wearer and having its lower portion extending a short distance below the upper edge of the front waist portion A, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. The lower edge of the apron is preferably arched, as

- shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the apron-section is united at each side to the garment, preferably by having a' small portion stitched between the front andback pieces adjacent to the hip, as shown at 0 c. The apron-piece O is also further secured to the garment when in use by means of buttonholes 0 c on its side edges, which button over the buttons 6 b of the back section. These buttonholes c 0. are preferably placed at right angles to the buttonholes a a, so that when the front waistsection A is buttoned over the said buttons 1) b they will lock the apron-section and prevent the buttonholes thereof from slipping off of the buttons. shown the front waist-section provided with vertically-disposed buttonholes, while those of the apron are horizontal; but the relative posidtions may obviously be reversed, if desire Thus in the drawings I-have The apron-piece C is provided on its lower part with pockets 0 c patched or stitched externally thereon, and the upper part of the apron is also provided with a watch-pocket 0 also patched or applied upon the apron. The watch-pocket 0 is of peculiar construction for the purpose of preventing the watch from slipping out of the pocket. To this end it is provided with the inclined upper edge inclining upward from the outer side toward-the center of the apron and forming a point 0, and thesaid upper edge adjacent to said point is stitched down upon the apron so as to partially close the pocket. The inner edge-0- is also inclined inwardly from the bottom of the pocket to' the point 0. In stooping over a watch carried 'inthis pocket will naturally follow the inner inclined edge 0 of the pocket,

"and should. it slide to the mouth of the pocket it will be arrested by the stitching 0 which partially closes the mouth of the pocket adjacent to thepoint c and inclined edge 0, thus preventing the watch from falling out. The apron C is also provided centrally at the waist-line with a bar or staple c intowhich the hook a ofthe front waist portion A is placed when the garment is WOI'II to unite the apron-and front waist portion centrally.

Thea'pron Q is provided at its upper corners with the usual buttons 0 c to-engage the suspenders D, the rear portions of which are connected to buttons 6 b on the rear waist portion B. The suspenders, therefore, sustain-the front Waist portion A by its connections with the apron at the sides (at 0 0) and centrally bythe engagement of hook a and 'bar- 0 The apron G is also preferably provided with abuttonhole c to receive-the watchchain.

A garment constructed as described is very simple and cheap to manufacture, is exceedingly durable, and presents an extremely neat and tidy-appearance in use.

What I claim, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is

1. 'Inan overall, the combination with the main frontyand back pieces, of a front apronpiece formed separately from the main front piece, and extending above the same, said apron-piece being united .permanently to the garment only-at each side adjacent to its lower edge at points below the waist-line of the garment, substantially as described.

'2. In-an overall, the combination with the main front and back pieces united by the inner and outer leg-seams, of a separate apronpiece, extending above the main front piece and provided with pockets, said apron-piece being permanently united to the frontand back pieces adjacent to its lower edge, at each side and provided with meansfor detachably connecting it with the main front and back pieces adjacent to the waist-line, substantially as described.

3. In an overall, the combination with the main front and back pieces united by the inner and outer leg-seams, of a separate apronpiece extending above the main front piece and provided with pockets, said apron-piece being permanently united to the front and back pieces adjacent to its lower edge, at each side and provided with means for detachably connecting it with the main front and back pieces adjacent to the waist-line and means for detachably connecting the central portion of the upper edge of the main front piece to said apron, substantially as described.

4. In an overall, the combination with the -main front piece provided with waist and leg and provided with pockets,-said apron-piece being permanently united-to said main front and backpieces adjacent to-its lower edge at each side, securing-buttons, secured to the back piece at each side, said apron being provided with buttonholes at each side for engaging the said buttons, and said main front piece being provided with buttonholes arranged angularly to those of the apron-piece for engaging the said buttons, substantially as described.

6. In an overall, the combination with the main front and back pieces united by the inner and outer leg-seams, ofa separate apronpiece, extending above the main front piece and provided with pockets, said apron-piece being permanently united to said main front and back pieces adjacent to its lower edge at each side, securing -buttons secured to the back piece at each side, said apron being provided with buttonholes at each side for engaging the said buttons, and said main front piece being provided with buttonholes arranged angularly to those of the apron-piece for engaging the said buttons, and havinga hook at the central part, said apron-piece being provided centrally with a bar to receive said hook, substantially as described.

7. In an overall, the combination with the main back piece provided at each side with a securing-button, and the main front piece united to the back piece by inner and outer leg-seams, and having buttonholes at each side to engage the buttons of the back piece, of a separate front apron-piece extending above the main front piece and provided with pockets, said apron having a portion-at each side adjacent toits lower edgeunited tothe main front and back pieces between the'same, by

the outer leg-seams, and having at each. side a buttonhole disposed angularly to the corre-- sponding buttonhole of the main front piece,

for engaging the side buttons of the main back piece, between it and the said main front piece, said main front piece being also provided centrally with a hook andthe apron being provided centrally with a bar to be en- IO gaged by said hook and Suspender-attaching FREDERICK GEORGE DODSHON.
