UNDERWAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,427, dated June 2, 1896. Application filed February 28, 1893- Seria1No,464,0-28. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. MCKAY, of Minneapolis, county of Henncpin, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Childrens Underwaists, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved underwaist for boys, but applicable also for the use of girls, misses, and ladies, which shall permit a perfect freedom of action for the child at the waist-line in romping and playing, allowing free use of the body in bending forward, backward, or side wise without straining the buttonholes, tearing the clothing, or twisting off the buttons, and which shall also support the hose in an elastic mann or, as herein after fully described.
The figure is a side view of the waist.
In the drawing, A represents the body portion, which is extended up in the form of shoulder-pieces B B in pairs, which are connected over the shoulders by elastic straps 66 a.
To the lower edge of the waist is attached a waistbandor belt 0, provided with buttons, to which the drawers, trousers, or skirt are fastened. This waistband is not directly attached to the body of the Waist, but is offset from the same an inch or so below its lower edge, and is connected to the Waist-body at short distances apart by elastic bands or straps D, arranged vertically all around the waist-line.
E are thehose-supports, which are not connected to the waistband, but are connected to the lower edge of the body of the waist above the waistband, so that the strain of the hose comes upon the body of the waist, and is borne by the elastic shoulder-straps.
By making the waistband separate from the body and connected thereto by elastic straps I not only secure freedom for the child in bending the body in all directions, thus avoiding destructive strains on the buttons and buttonholes at the Waist, but I secure also a better ventilation at the waist-line, and, furthermore, the strain of the hose is made entirely independent of that which comes upon the drawers or pants from the bending of the body.
I do not confine myself to the vertical arrangement of the elastic straps D, but may arrange them at any angle or position desired. It is important, however, that the buttons or other fastenings of the waistband, which sustain the skirt, trousers, or drawers, should be located at the point where the elastic bands 7 are joined to the waistband.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture an underwaist provided with a drawers-supporting belt arranged entirely below the lower edge of the body of said waist whereby to avoid the bulk resulting from an overlapping of said edge and belt the latter being provided with fastening devices for securing the drawers, the body of the Waist being provided along its lower edge from end to end thereof with a series of depending elastic straps connecting said body of the waist with the belt all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
