Description

(NoModeL) r W. L. BIRNBAUM.
TROUSERS.
No. 498,951. Patented June 6, 1893.
' Uivrrnn STATES PATENT rn'icn.
\VILLIAM L. BIRNBAUM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,951, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed March 25, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. BIRNBAUM, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Trousers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of trousers whereby they are better adapted to remain in position about the waist and form a support.
My improved trousers are more especially intended for use of bicycle riders and equestrians, the trousers herein shown beingof the kind extending only to about the knee.
Trousers now commonly worn by bicyclists are kept in place by a belt buckled about the body. I desire to dispense with this belt which is stiff and objectionable, and yet I wish the waist part of the trousers to remain up in place. I
I have produced novel trousers having a front flap or fall extended preferablyacross the front of the trousers substantially from side seam to side seam, and within this fall are tongues connected with the trousers at or near the side seams and adapted to cross the abdomen and be connected together by a strong spring, preferably in the form of an elastic fabric or web, said web being connected at one end to one tongue, and having at its other end part of a suitable fastening device, the other co-operating part being carried by the other tongue. Into the waist-band at the hips I have stitched elastic Webs to co-operate with part of a fastening device at the corner of the fall. The fall preferably has a guide-loop through which are passed the tongues.
Figure 1 shows a pair of trousers embodying my invention, the front fall being turned down. Fig. 2 is a detail in side elevation to be referred to. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing the two members of the fastening device.
The trousers are composed of back pieces A, A, and front pieces B, B, stitched together at the inner and at the-outer sides of the legs as at a, b. The front portions B, B, are stitched each to the other at b to form a fall Serial No. 467,602. (No model.)
other end piece 0 it having attached to it parts d, d',of fastening devices, the said parts being socket pieces adapted to engage studs d d, connected to an end piece d -of leather or other strong material. These tongues cross the abdomen from the outseams and act as a strong band or belt, yet there is provision,by the elastic spring 0 to let thetrousers yield to the shape and movement of the abdomen. The waist-band has pockets 6, e, in which are secured the ends of other springs called by me hip springs and marked e, preferably elastic webs, the outer ends of which have end pieces 6 carrying parts of fastenings or studs c to be engaged by socket pieces e forming the other halves of the fastenings, the socket pieces being attached to the leathers e The fastenings d, d, and e 6 are such as ordinarily used for gloves, and instead of the particular fastenings shown I may use any other usual fastening devices.
The corners of the fall are held up by the fastenings, and as the Waist-band is enlarged or stretched the springs e stretch.
The fall has, at its inner side,a strong loop f through which the tongue is passed to thus hold up the central part of the fall.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The herein described improved trousers, the same consisting of the back A, the front B having the fall 13', and the springs e, e, located at the hips, combined with fastening devices to connect the corners of the fall with the said springs, substantially as described.
2. The herein described improved trousers, the same consisting of the back A, the front B having the fall B, the tongues G, 0, connected to the back and extended across the abdomen and provided with a spring as 0 and fastening devices to connect said tongues together and leave the spring operative, combined with fastening devices to hold the corners of the fall when lifted, substantially as described. 5 3. The herein described improved trousers, the same consisting of the back A, the front B having the fall B,'and the springs e, 6, located at the hips, combined with fastening devices to connect the corners of the fall with the said springs, and the tongues to cross the abdomen, said tongues being connected together by a spring as (J and fastening devices, I substantially as described.
4. The herein described improved trousers, the same consisting of the back A, the front I 13 having the fall B, and the sprin'gse, 6,
located at the hips, combined with fastening devices to connect the corners of the fall with the said springs, and the tongues to cross the abdomen, said tongues being connected together by a spring as O and fastening devices, and a loop at the central part of the fly to be entered 'by't'he tongues, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM L. BIRNBAUM.
Witnesses GEo. W. GREGORY, EMMA J. BENNETT.
