SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,926, dated January 29, 1889. Application filed July 21, 1888. Serial No. 280,594. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN JoNEs GREELY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented. an Improved Garment, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates the body portion of a garment embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view with the four flaps and the front and rear portions of the garment spread out.
My invention is applicable to that class of garments which cover the legs and a portion of the body, commonly called pants, trousers, breeches, overalls, or drawers, and it consists in a garment the waist portion of which is provided with a placket over each hip, the edges of the plackets formed by the front and rear flaps of the waist portion of the garment being connected by four straps, two of these straps meeting at the front and the other two at the rear, and each pair being provided with suitable fastening devices.
In the drawings, A represents the main garment, which is properly cut and fashioned, as will be clear to all skilled in the art; but the waist portion is formed with front and rear flaps, A A which are disconnected from each other along the lines a b 0 cl. The wider end of strap 13 is secured to the edge a of the front flap, A and the wider end of the strap B to the edge I) of the front flap, A while the wider end of strap D is secured to the edge e of rear flap, A, and the wider end of strap D to the edge (I of rear flap, A. \V hen the garment is in place on the wearer, (see Fig. 2,) the edges of the front flap, A and the rear flap, A, make a V-shaped recess on each side of the garment, which recess is covered by the wider portions of the straps B 13 D D, straps B and D covering the V-shaped recess on one side, as shown in Fig. 2, and the straps 13 D- covering the recess on the other side. The straps l3 13 extend to the rear and are 0011- nected by a hook-buckle, 1, and loop 2 in the garment shown in the drawings, while the straps D I) extend forward, where they are connected by hook-buckle 3 and loop at. In the garment shown 'in the drawings I have shown the straps B 33 as extending over the rear flap, A, and the straps D D under the front flap, A as that is desirable in the manufacture of pants; but for overalls and drawers it matters little whether this arrangement 5 5 or the reverse be used. The four loops f shown in the drawings are adapted to receive the hooks of the hook-buckles, which form part of the suspenders; but it will of course be obvious that buttons and button-holes or other suitable fastening devices may be used in lieu of the hook-buckles and loops shown in the drawings.
The main novelty of my invention consists in the waist portion of the garment, made up of the front and rear flaps, A A arranged together to leave a placket over each hip, with their edges a and Z) connected by the straps B and B and their edges 0 and (Z by the straps D and D. This construction gives a draft around the body which is unlike anything ever known before in garments of this kind, and which is one of the main advantages of my invention, as will be seen from Fig. 2, where the draft of the straps B B holds the front flap, A over the front of the wearer and the draft of straps D D holds the rear flap, A,' 'over the back of the wearer. This draft is due to the fact that the front and rear flaps are connected by straps united to the edges a Z) c d of the plackets, and there is therefore no draft around the body of the wearer and near the upper edge of the waist portion of the garment.
I am aware of the patents to Borzell, No. 226,966, of 1880, and to Eager, No. 115,832, of 1871, and disclaim all that is shown in those patents. In the latter two belts are shown one secured around the front flap and the other around the rear flap of the pants. In the former the'rcar straps are somewhat like mine in appearance, but operate in a different way, while the front straps are in substance a mere belt. In both these patents the draft is thrown substantially around the upper edge of the waist portion, while the main object of my invention is to prevent the draft from being thrown around the upper edge of the waist portion of the garment and to make a draft which causes the front portion to set [00 properly and an independent draft which causes the rear portion to set properly.
hat I claim as my invention is The garment above described, the Waist portion having the front and rearflaps, A A with their edges (0 b 0 (Z forming a placket over each hip and connected by the straps B B, secured to the edges 60]) of the front flap, A from the top of such edges to the bottom. of the placket, and by the straps D :D', socured to the edges '0 (l of the rear flap, A,
from the top of such edges to the bottom of 10 the placket, the straps D D uniting at the front and the straps B B at the rear, all substantially as described.
BENJAMIN JONES GREELY.
