SHIRT-WAIST.
Specieation of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 24, 1910.
Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
serial No. 563,120.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL B. REED, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt- Waists; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed, its object being to provide womens shirtwaists with simple, economical and eiicient attachments with which to secure belts in detachable and preferably adjustable connection therewith in order to obvia-te the difficulties and objections heretofore eX- perienced as a result of permanently fastening the belts to the waists.
Figure l of the drawings represents a rear elevation of a fragment of a womans shirtwaist provided with an attachment in accordance with my invention as the same appears in normal position engaged by a belt, and F ig. 2, a similar view illustrating the attachment and belt swung up out of normal position.
Referring by numeral to the drawings 3 indicates the aforesaid fragment of a womans shirtwaist, 4 a shield of suitable pliable material stitched to the middle of the back of the garment, adjacent to the belt-line of same to constitute a flap of said garment, and 5 each of a pair of strips of tape or other suitable material stitched at their ends to the shield upon which they are transversely arranged at a suitable distance apart, it being preferable to employ a plurality of the strips. It is preferable, as herein shown, to arrange the strips 5 upon the inner side of the shield.
The shield 4c and the strips 5 therewith combine to form a guide and holder in which to slip a belt 6, this belt being adjustable on the person wearing the shirtwaist without disarranging the garment, whereas shirtwaist belts are usually permanently stitched to the garments and cannot be adjusted on the wearers without disarranging said garments. The belt being detachable from the garment, provided with a guide and holder such as is herein shown and described, it follows that said belt may be shifted from one to another of such garments similarly equipped. Ordinarily there is wear and tear of a shirtwaist where it is stitched to its belt, but this disadvantage and annoyance are overcome by the employment of an attachment similar to the one above specified, and the belt being removed, laundering of the shirtwaist is facilitated. It is also to be noted that the aforesaid attachment may be changed from one position td another on a shirtwaistwith greater ease and with less liability to damage of the garment than is possible with a belt as ordinarily applied.
In practice'the skirt of the wearer of the waist is pinned to the flap of same instead of to said waist itself.
I claim:
The combination of a shirtwaist, a shield of pliable material stitched at one edge to the middle of the back of the garment adjacent to the belt-line of the same to constitute a flap of said garment upon which to pin a skirt, a pair of strips stitched at their ends to the flap upon which they are transversely arranged at a suitable distance apart, and a detachable belt interposed between said flap and strips.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
PAUL B. REED.
