UNDERGARMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,887, dated December 27, 1892.

Application filed August 11, 1892- Serial No. 442,755. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARTHA C. GELDowsKY, of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments for Women, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

This invention relates to undergarments for Women, and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved garment of this character designed to be Worn in place of a chemise, and possessing all the advantages of the latter and obviating the obj ectious thereto.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a front elevation of an undergarment embodying my invention, the same being illustrated as suspended from a belt. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pattern for the front section of the garment. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the pattern for the back section.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the undergarment, which consists of a frontsection, B, and a larger, back section, 0, the side edges of said sections being open and unsecured throughout their length. The front section B is formed at its upper end or at the waistline with a downwardly-convergent cutaway portion, b, whereby said section is adapted to fit the form of the wearer. This section is ordinarily made without goring, but when designed for stout figures two or more small darts or gores may be provided at its upper edge. The back section 0 is of substantially the same configuration as the front section, but of larger dimensions both in length and breadth. At the upper edge of the section 0 is provided a series of V- shaped gores, c, which diminish in length from the center towards each side, said gores when sewed in the usual manner adapting the section 0 to the form of the wearer.

In the present instance, I have shown the garment as removably suspended from a belt, D, the latter being provided with a series of buttons, d, which are received by buttonholes, at, provided in the sections of the garment. It will be obvious, however, that any suitable or preferred form of belt may be employed, to which the garment may be permanently or removably secured; or, the belt may be entirely dispensed with. In the latter event, the sections comprising the garment are secured together at the extreme upper end of two of the opposing edges, while the remaining edges are provided respectively with a button and button-hole;

The advantages of the above described undergarment will be apparent. The garment being bodiless free bending of the body of the wearer is permitted, and drawing of the garment and the clumsy folds at the waist line as in the ordinary chemise, are entirely obviated. A further advantage of the garment is that it is adapted to be applied and secured directly at the waist, in lieu of over the head as is the case with the ordinary chemise, and being divided into two distinct sections a free movement of the limbs in walking is secured, and twisting or winding of the fabric about the limbs of the wearer is entirely avoided.

I claim as my invention- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, an undergarment for women, consisting of a front section provided at its upper edge with a downwardly-convergent cut-away portion, a back section provided at its upper edge with gores, said sections being separated at their opposingedges, and means for suspending said sections from the waist only of the wearer; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, an undergarment for women, consisting of a front section provided at its upper edge with a downwardly-convergent cut-away portion, aback section provided at its uppenedge with a series of V-shaped gores decreasing in length from the center toward each edge, said sections being separated at their opposin g edges, and means for suspending said sections from the waist of the wearer; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
