Description

S m S R E OS w R T L a d 0 M O w Patented July 21,1891.
8 V: E N M T T A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC L. MORRIS, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
T R O U S E R S SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 456,424, dated July 21, 1891. Application filed January 17,1891. Serial No. 378,171. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC L. MORRIS, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trousers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvementin trousers, and has for its object to provide a means whereby, without being cutto the shape of what is denominated hip pants, they may be comfortably worn withoutsuspend ers; and a further object of the invention is to so construct the trousers that they maybe expeditiously and conveniently adjusted to fit the person should the wearer become slender or stout.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1. is a partial side elevation of a pair of trousers constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the waistband portion of the same.
The waistband of the trousers at the sides are provided with opposite openings 10, whereby a front section A and a rear section B are produced. The front section A is provided with the usual flies 11, and the back section at its center has a vertical opening 12 formed therein, the walls of which opening are ordinarily connected by a strip of light fabric 13, said strip 13 constituting an ordinary gusset. At each side of the opening 12 eyelets 14 are made in the cloth of the trousers, and through the eyelets a lacing 15 is passed, which may be tied in a suitable knot at the upper end. The two sections A and B at the side openings 10 overlap, the front section being the outer section, in which the pockets 16 are made. From each upper rear edge of the front section 12 a strap 17 is projected, which straps pass through loops 18, secured upon the outer face of the rear section B, and the two straps are connected by a buckle 19, preferably comprising two members a and a, both of which members are adjustable upon the straps. The inner ends of the back section B are provided with straps 20, corresponding to the straps 17 of the front section. The straps 20 are located in engagement with the inner face of the front section A of the trousers, and are united bya buckle similar to that employed in connection with the said straps 17, as is best shown in Fig. 2. Itis obvious that by either taking in or letting out the straps 17 and 20 the diameter of the trousers at the waistband may be increased or decreased, as may be demanded by the condition of the wearers person, and that the lacing and gusset constitute auxiliary means to accomplish the same end. It is further obvious that when the straps have been properly adjusted to the waist the trousers will cling thereto and will be readily supported therefrom without necessitating the use of suspenders. Trousers cut as above described fit more snugly at the waist and present a much neater appearance than when out in the ordi' nary way.
As a distinguishing feature of my trousers, it will be noticed that the back section is made adjustable as to width, so that it can be fitted to wide or narrow backs without varying the position of its side edges or the slit 10 at the side line of the wearer, and the front straps of such back section being adjustable at their front ends may be set to fit persons with large or small stomachs. It is thus apparent that this novel feature of my trousers, including an adjustable back and an adjustable front connected therewith, e11- ables me to fit the same pair of trousers to a person having a wide back and small stomach and to one having a narrow back and large stomach, and set the slits 10 in both cases at the side lines of the wearer, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a pair of trousers having slits or openings at the side forming front and rear sections, having the front section provided centrally with a fly and at its edges with fastening-straps, and the back section being adjustably constructed, whereby it may be set to fit a narrow or wide back, and provided at its edges with straps having at their ends adjustable in both instances, as and for the purposes set fastenings, all substantially as described and forth.
shown, whereby the trousers may be fitted ISAAC L MORRIS accurately to a person having a wide hack and 5 small stomach or to one having; a narrow Witnesses:
back and large stomach, and the slits may he SAMUEL HARRIS,
set or located at the side lines of the wearer E. COHEN.
