. UNTTED STATES PATENT Orrrcno SAMUEL BUTZ, OF EASION, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,505, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed August 20, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL BUTZ, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refence beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shirt embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the same with one of the adjustable bosoms applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the shirt with an adjustable bosom of a smaller size or gage applied thereto for the purpose of making up a smaller neck measure or gage, part of the said bosom having been broken away for the purpose of rendering the illustration more clear; and Fig. 4 is a rear view of one of the bosoms forming part of my invention.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates toshirts and bosoms for dress and general wear; and it has for its object to overcome some of the principal disadvantages of the ordinary ready-made shirts, and to provide an article which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, inexpensiveness, and general efliciency.
WVith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and. arrangement of'parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In ready-made shirts, as ordinarily manufactured, there is usually a certain stated proportion between the breast or bosom and the neck or collar measure. Thus, forinst-ance, a shirt of forty-two inches breastmeasure is usually gaged to a seventeen-inch collar, a forty-inch shirt to a sixteen-and-one-half-inch collar, a thirty-eight-ineh shirt to asixteen-ineh collar, and so on; but it often happens that a person wearing a collar of a certain sizesay sixteen inches-requires ashirt of a breastmeasure either greater or smaller than the regulation thirty-eight inches, and such per- Serial No 174,896. (No model.)
son could not be fitted with ready-made shirts, except by making and carrying very large stocks of ofif-sizes, which, for obvious reasons, it is practically impossible to do.
To provide for such cases, and to insure other advantages, which will be hereinafter described, my invention consists in making the shirtwith a yoke having a half-neckband, which is gaged to the breast-measure of the shirt, the same to be used in combination with detachable bosoms the neckbands of which are gaged to make up the required collarmeasure, thus enabling every purchaser to be precisely fitted with the shirt as well as with the collar, and from a smaller stock than dealers would otherwise find it necessary to carry.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates my improved shirt, which in the case illustrated in the drawings hereto annexed is made with an open front, much after the manner of a night-shirt as now ordinarily manufactured. The back of the shirt has a yoke, B, which terminates at its upper edge in the band C, forming what may be termed a halfneckband, and the size of which is gaged to correspond with the breastmeasure of the shirt. Thus, for instance, in a shirt of i'orty-two-inch breast-measure, and calling ordinarily for a seventeen-inch collar, the band 0, being one-half neck-meats ure, will measure eight and one-half inches, and in shirts of different sizes the same proportions will be observed. The band C will be provided with acentrally-loeated fixed or detachable collar-button, D, and the ends of said band are provided with fixed or detachable buttons E, or any other suitable means for the attachment of the bosom.
The bosoms which are to be used in combination with my improved shirts, and which in the drawings hereto annexed are designated by letter F, are provided at the upper edge with bands G, forming the front half of the neckband of the wearer. These neckbands will be gaged to one-half of customary collarmeasures, so that by combining a shirt and a bosom of proper sizes any desired neckmeasure may be made up. To illustrate: Suppose that a person whose chest-measure is forty two inches requires a collar measuring only fifteen and a half inches instead of seventeen inches, which is the customary neck-measure of shirts of this size, the'half-neckband of one of my improved shirts of this size will measure eight and a half inches, and the purchaser will then be supplied with bosoms having neckbands measuring seven inches, thus making up the required size-fifteen and a half inches. Suppose, on the other hand, that the person wearing a forty-two-inch shirt requires .a larger (say an eighteen-inch) collar. He will then be supplied with bosoms having nineand-a-half-inch neckbands, whereby the requisite neck-measure is again made up. In this manner an exact fit may be insured for every one in a most convenient manner and at a moderate expense. The neckbands of the bosoms are provided at their ends with button-holes H, or other suitable means for their attachment to the ends of the neckbands of the shirt. They also have centrally-located buttonholes for the reception of the front collar-button. The lower end of the bosom is provided with button-holed tab I, of ordinary construction, for attachment to one of the buttons of the drawers of the wearer, and to the rear side of the bosom, near its lower end, is attached one or more straps or loops, J J, through which may be passed one or more straps, K, attached to the front of the shirt, as will be clearly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the free ends of which may be atattached to a button, L, also secured to the shirt. The bosom will in this manner be held sufficiently close to the body of the wearer, but in such a manner as to adjust itself without breaking or creasing when the body is bent, and without causing any inconvenience.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. By gaging the necks of the shirts and bosoms, as herein described, a shirt of any stated size may be fitted with a bosom to receive a collar of any desired number, thus in a great may instances avoiding the absolute necessity heretofore existing of having shirts made to measure. Again, with each shirt any desired number of bosomssay three or more-may be supplied, enabling the bosom to be changed or renewed as often as may be desired without necessity for changing the shirt. The bosom may also, when desired, be conveniently removed by persons traveling or at work, and replaced when desired, thereby contributing both economy and comfort. The shirt, with the bosom removed, may do service as anight-shirt, and a complete outfit and a more varied assortment of this class of garments may thus be secured by any individual at asmaller expenditure than would otherwise be the case.
In the manufacture of my improved shirts and bosoms it may be found necessary or desirable to make various changes in the construction of details. Thus, for instance, by making proper modifications, which will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, the invention may be applied-to open back as well as to open-front shirts, although, for various reasons, I consider the latter preferable in this connection; but I would have it understood that I reserve to myself the right to this and to any and all other changes and modifications which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I am aware that it is not new to make a detachable bosom for shirts, and to secure the same thereto, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with a shirt the back of which is provided with a half-neckband of a certain fixed measure, and the front with a button near its waist portion, and a tab secured upon each side of said button, the free ends of which are provided with button-holes, of a detachable adjustable bosom, the top of which is provided with a half-neckband, the size and slope of which correspond with each other, and the bottom with two strips secured thereto forming loops upon the under side, and a fiy-tab secured to the lower end, said half-neckbands being secured together,sub-
stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL BUTZ.
