THE NORRIS PETER: cm, wxsnmarou, n. c.

SHIRT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 24, 1907.
Patented March 10, 1908.
Serial No. 394,276.
that the available length of the shirt bosom is increased, whereby the same may be worn with either a rounded dress vest, which is,
usually provided with three buttons, or with a pointed dress vest, which is cut lower than a rounded dress vest and is usually provided with only two buttons, and at the same time to so' sha e the bosom of the shirt that the same will remain in place and give the litmost comfort to the wearer.
Further objects of the invention are to provide means whereby the bosom of the shirt is made to conform to the chest of the wearer so that it will not bulge out at the sides or bottom of the vest.
The button holes in the front of the shirt for the insertion of suitable studs, are also so placed and the shirt bosom so formed as to prevent the upper plait of the shirt from liftlng or bulging. The neck band of the shirt is also so constructed that the collar attached to the same will fit close to the neck of the wearer without wrinkling the sides of the neckband and causing the collar to ride over the same.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and to these ends the same consists of means for carrying out the above objects, embodying the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully described and clamed in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of a shirt with parts broken away made according to my invention. The figure also shows in dotted lines a portion of the outline of a low cut pointed vest and a portion of a low cut rounded vest; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of one side of the shirt bosom on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the lower end of the shirt bosom on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of a neck band opened out flat.
L In said drawings, A represents the body of the shirt and B the shirt bosom which is rounded at the sides as shown .at C and terminate at the bottom in an ogee curve D to form an extension E, the lower portion of which is cut on a straight line F. It will be seen that a shirt bosom constructed in this manner will give the greatest available length by means of the extension E and at the same time the portions of the shirt bosom denoted by the ogee curves D are so cut as to afford plenty of room for the movement of the hips of the wearer when in a sitting position. It is also to be noted that the width of the extension E denoted by the length of the line F is sufiicient to keep the end of the shirt bosom in position.
My improved shirt bosom is so designed that the same will not bulge out over the open front of the bottom of either a rounded or a pointed vest. In Fig. 1 of the drawings is shown in dotted lines G a portion of the outline of a vest provided with a rounded open front and three buttons H, J and K. A vest provided with an open pointed front is also shown, the same being denoted by dotted lines L. The pointed vest is only provided with two buttons J and K as the same is cut lower than the rounded vest. A shirt bosom constructed in this manner will permit of the wearing of a low cut pointed vest with a great deal of comfort as formerly the bosom of the shirt was rounded as far down as the line F of the extension E which caused great inconvenience to the wearer by bulging outward, due to the movement of the hips, especially when the wearer was in a sitting position.
To further facilitate the shirt bosom B conforming to the shape of the chest, the sides of the same from the dotted line M outward is made one ply of linen less in thickness than the central portion of the bosom B, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 at N, although if desired another thickness of linen may be cut away. Due to the cutting away of a portion of one or more of the different plies of the'linen, it will be seen that the sides of the shirt bosom will round over the edges of the chest in a uniform manner instead of bulging outward as is often the case when the full number of plies are carried out to edge of the bosom B so as to cause a sharp break between the edge of the bosom and the body of the shirt which is usually only of one thickness of linen. The body of the shirt A is also secured to the bosom B on the front side of the shirt bosom as shown at O instead of the back as has heretofore been the case. here the body of the shirt connects with the bosom, is provided a strengthening strip l? the outline of which is shown in Fig. 1.. The securing of the body of the shirt to the front of the bosom also facilitates the rounding over of the sides of the bosom so as to more closely fit the chest of the wearer and ren'iain in position. The lower portion of the extension E is also made of a less number of plies of linen as shown in Fig. 3 and the body A of the shirt is also sewed to the front of the extension so that the same is more readily kept in position and prevented from bulging outward.
The body of the shirt secured to the sides of the shirt bosom on the line C, instead of being cut on the same curve is preferably cut out a little more as shown by the dotted line Q, so that when the side of the shirt bosom along the line C is secured to the body of the shirt along the line the same will help to prevent the shirt bosom bulging and cause the bosom of the shirt to normally lie close against the chest midway of its length instead of bulging at this point which is not desirable.
My improved neck band B is shown laid out flat in Fig. 4 and the same is preferably made as shown. Thebottom of the neck band it along which the same is secured to the body of the shirt is preferably cut on a straight line which. is secured to the body of the shirt which is also cut on a straight line as shown in Fig. 1. The top of the neck band is preferably cut low in the back and in the front where the collar is secured to the neck band by means of collar buttons, but the sides of the neck band, that is the portions of the band on each side of the back, is cut so as to provide the raised portions S which prevent the collar from riding over the sides of the neckband.
The shirt bosom as shown is open down the front and the same is provided with suitable slits or button holes T for the insertion of studs to hold the plaits of the shirt bosom closed. Instead of placing the button holes T in the center of the overlap of the two plaits of the shirt bosom, the same are placed nearer the edge of the top plait which necessitates the holes in the bottom plait being further away from the edge of the under plait. This feature facilitates the studs inserted in the button holes in holding the plaits of the shirt bosom shut and prevents the same from bulging, especially does it prevent the edge of the upper plait from turning up along the edge as the studs being near the edge of the plait holds the same firmly down and the additional width of the button hole from the edge of the bottom plait give plenty of stillness to hold the bottom of the stud in position.
Obviously some features of the invention may be used without others, and the same may be embodied in widely varying forms therefore, without limiting the invention to the construction shown and described.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A shirt comprising a body portion, a shirt bosom secured to said body portion, said body portion being cut on a greater curve than the curve of the side of the shirt bosom, so that when the sides of the shirt bosom are secured to the greater curved edge of the body portion the bosom of the shirt will remain firmly in position.
2. A. shirt comprising an open shirt bosom consisting of an upper and lower plait, said plaits being provided with button holes which are placed nearer the edge of the upper plait than the edge of the lower plait, an extended portion at the lower end of said shirt bosom, a plurality of plies of linen in said shirt bosom some of which extend to the full width of the bosom only at the top and bottom, the central portions of which are less than the full width or the full length of the shirt bosom, the sides of said shirt bosom and said extended portion being cut inward and downward in an ogee curve, all of said features enabling said shirt bosom to remain in, position when in use.
in testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscr1bmg wltnesses.
EDXVARD J. QUIGLEY.
