B. MOSKOWITZ UNDERWAI ST Filed July 1923 10 INVENTOB 384/0/77! fi/askow tz 14 7 BY I J ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 26, 1926.
' UNITED, STATES,
BENJAMIN MOSKOWITZ, OF NEW YORK, N.
' UNDERWAIST.
Application filed July 17,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that BENJAMIN Mosnowrrz, citizen of the United States, residing at 780 Caldwell Avenue, city of New vYork, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underwaists, of which the following is a specification. I V p This invention relates to improvements'in underwaists. More particularly, it is directed to a garment of the character described adapted to be worn by children and provided with means for supporting the lower garment removably attached thereto. One object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character described in which the belt portion and button tabs or similar devices for supporting the lower garments shall be so constructed and secured as to positively withstand thestrains to which they are subject in wear, and reduce to a minimum the liability of these devices or the garment being torn or weakened by such strains or otherwise. 7
A further object is to provide a garment of the character described which shall be neat in appearance, comparatively simple and cheap tomanufacturaand durable to a high degree;
A still further'object is to provide in a garment of the character described, an im-' proved construction of neck portion whereby the latter is made in a single continuous member and is adapted to enable the garment to be more cheaply manufactured and make the same more comfortable to the wear-- er and enhance the appearance thereof.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and inpart hereinafter pointed out. 7 I p I The invention accordingly consists'in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of partswhich will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will-be indicated in the follow ing claims. r
In the accompanying drawing in which is shown one of the various possible illus trative embodimentsfof this invention,
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved underwaist;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the lower 1923. Serial No. 652,034.
portion of the garment illustrating the manner of assembling the parts of the waist and belt portions; and
Fig.3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view out along line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 1 represents the body portion of the garment which may constitute any desired number and arrangement of separate pieces or panels suitably out and joined to givethe de sired size and shape to the garment and provide the necessary arm-holes 2. Reinforcing sections 3 are secured to the garment and positioned under and partially around the arm-holes 2 to give the garment added strength and body.
Extendingfrom the body at the bottom thereof is abeltportion 5 to which is attached the lower garment (not shown). This belt portion is made of two layers of material so as to provide a double ply as shown in Figs, 2 and 3. The upper free edges of the thickness of the belt portion are further overturned as shown at 6, and these four thicknesses of the belt material are presented to the lower portion of the body 1 where the belt portion is secured by suitable means such as a line of stitching 7 The waist band 8 is positioned over the juncture of the body and belt portions and secured by suitable meanssuch as parallel lines of stitching9 and 10. Before taking the stitches 9 and 10, or during this opera tion, a series of upper tabsll and lower tabs 12 are positioned substantially at right angles to the waist band and underneath the latter, so-that the upper line of stitching 9 willpass through the upper tabs 11 and the lower line of stitching will pass through the lower tabs 12. The upper tabs 11- are then turned down over the waist band and a narrow strip of material or tape 13 superim posed on the waist band and secured thereto by parallel lines of stitches 15, and 16, which also pass through the upper tabs 11. Likewise, a like narrow strip of material ortape 14 is superimposed on the waist over the line of stitches 10 and secured, by parallel rows of stitching 15 and 16 which also pass through the tabs .12, so that the attaching tabs 11 and 12 are secured by three separate and distinct lines of stitching, thus providing a very strong holding of thetabs to the body to effectively withstand the strains on the garment which are exerted most strongly at the waist portion thereof. The tabs 11 and 12 are provided with buttons or other attaching devices 22. If desired, an additional elastic tab 18 carrying a member 18 for garter attachment may be se cured in like manner at the sides of the garment and secured at the point of attaclnnent of and in the same manner as the tab 11 at each side.
It will be noted that in addition to the triple fastening of the tabs by means of the three bands, 8, 13, and H, these three strips together with the two layers of the belt portion also give more body to the garment at the waist, and thus reinforce and strengthen the same at the point where the garment is liable to be torn by the strain thereon. It will be noted further that by reason of the two-ply construction of the belt portion, these three bands 8, 13 and 14 are stitched 011 a more substantial body or background, in this way minimizing the liability of these bands being torn away from the belt portion under the strain of the wearer.
The side and bottom edges of the garment may be neatly finished off with a continuous binding tape 19 as shown in the drawing, and reinforcing tapes 20, 20 may be provided parallel to the side edges and spaced a little therefrom and stitched to the body. Button-holes 21 are formed between the tape 19 and one of the side reinforcing tapes such as 20, and button tabs 23 carrying the buttons 23' for said button-holes are secured by the stitches passing through the tape 20 in the manner similar to that a].- ready described.
The neck portion of the garment is pro-- vided by means of a continuous tape 2% extending from side to side, and stitched along the upper edge of the garment to conform to the curvature to which it is cut from the'pattern, the intermediate portion 2% of this tape 24 being stitched to the upper edge of the arm-holes so as to simultaneously form the shoulder straps. In constructions heretofore made, the neck band or tape, so far as-I am aware, has been interrupted at the arm-hole and an extra and wider piece seamed to the neck band, by transverse stitches. This has resulted in an extra thickness and width at the shoulder above the arm-holes which has made the garment uncomfortable and unsightly. If desired, a continuous scalloped strip 25 may be secured along the upper edge of the neck band 24, so as to give a lace effect, and likewise scalloped strips 26, 26 secured along the edges of the arm-holes to give a similar neat lace effect.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a garment in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be under stood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an undergarment, the combination of a single ply of material forming a body portion and a belt portion of double ply extending from said body portion and joined thereto, a waist band superimposed on said body portion at the junction between said body portion and said belt portion, a series of spaced tabs located between said body portion and said waist band adjacent the upper edge of the latter, a line of stitching passing through said waist band and through said tabs, another series of spaced tabs held between the body portion and said waist band adjacent the lower edge of the latter, a line of stitching passing through said waist band, said tabs and the body portion adjacent the lower edge thereof, reinforcing strip superimposed on said waist band adjacent the upper edge thereof and secured thereto by stitches passing through said strip, waist. band, upper tabs and the body, another reinforcing strip snperimposed on said waist band adjacent the lower edge thereof and secured by a line of stitches passing through said waist band and said lower tabs and the body, said first series of tabs being folded back under the first mentioned reinforcing strip and fastened down therewith.
2. An undergarment comprising a body portion a single thickness'of material, a belt portion consisting of two thicknesses of material having their upper edges inturned and secured to the body portion, a waist band superimposed on the body portion over the junction between the body portion and the belt portion, tabs located back of the upper and lower edges of the waist band. and lines of stitches adjacent said edges of the waist band and extending through the tabs, body portion and belt portion, the tabs at the upper edge of the waist band being folded downwardly over the waist band, securing strips superimposed over the edges of said waist band, and lines of stitches at both edges of said securing strips extending through said tabs and the body portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
BENJAMIN MOSKOWITZ.
