Description

R. GREENIDGE. Collar.
No. 206,437. Patented July 30,1878.
N PETERS, PNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
RUPERT GREENIDGE, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO GEO. 13. OLUETT, BROTHER & 00., OF TROY, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,437, dated July 30, 1878; application filed March 19,1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUPERT GREENIDGE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collars for Ladies and Gentlemens Year, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved collar complete, a portion of the upper layer of cloth being turned back to exhibit the location of the inner ply. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the three plies of the collar and the band being shown as turned away from each other; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the collar complete.
Like letters in all the figures indicate corresponding parts.
A A are the two outer layers of cloth formin g the exterior of the collar proper. i is the band, and C is the back button-hole. D represents one or more thicknesses of cloth forming the inner ply or stiffening for the collar.
The nature of my invention consists in making a collar with a graduated band, narrowest at the center of the collar-body, and with the back button-hole above the band; and the object is to produce a collar which shall propcrly conform to the neck by narrowin'g the band at the necessary points, thereby preventing the band from showing above the necktie, and atsame time preserving enough of the band to insure suflicient strength and firmness to the back of the collar to maintain its shape and durability.
I make the body of the collar in the ordinary form, except that, preferably, in certain styles I make one ply of the body narrower than the others, so that there will be a thinn er part extending from just above the back button-hole each way toward the ends and graduated in width, for" the purpose of permitting the collar-body to readily yield backward to the pressure of the neck, which, in certain styles of collars, is quite important.
The band of the collar is of the usual width at the ends thereof, but, instead of extending the entire length of even width, is gradually lessened in width from near the ends of the collar-body back to the center, so that it will have the proper curve to fit the neck, and still be Wide enough at all points to give strength and firmness to the collar. The back buttonhole is placed above the band, so that the proper width of material below the buttonhole is maintained to insure the tit ot' the collar to the neck, while no part of the band will show above the button and neck-tie, thereby securing good shape and fit, and avoiding the often unseemly appearance of the band projecting above the neck-tie. The button-hole 0 being located below the inner ply, D, and in the thin part of the collar, renders it easy to adjust the collar upon the back button of the shirt.
I am aware that collars have been made with sectional bands extending from the center of the collar, or from any point between center and ends thereof, and also with the back button-hole in the body of the collar; and, further, that collars have been made with a continuous band in one piece, and I make no claim to such constructions; but
VhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of curved graduated band B, outer folds, A A, and the inner ply, 1), looated above the band, and leaving a thin section, in which the button-hole O is made, as and for the purposes explained.
In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand this 1st day of March, 1878.
RUPERT GREENIDGE.
