' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo GEORGE AMBROSE LORENTZ, OF ST.` PAUL, MINNESOTA.
STOCKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 455,7 57, dated July 14, 1891. Application iiled November 7, 1890. Serial No. 370,687. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE AMBROsE LORENTZ, of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota` have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockings; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention has for its object to provide astocking which will dispense with the necessity of employing garters and stockingsupporters, which are necessarily inconvenient, andin manyinstances injurious, afurther object being to provide a complete covering for the limb of the wearer, permitting` the usual nether under garments to be dispensed with, if desired.
The invention consists in certain novel details inthe construction of the articles, whereby the usefulness and convenience both of manufacture and while being worn is increased, as will nowbe described, and pointed out particularly in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View looking at the inner side of astocking, constructed in accordance with myinvention, with a portion broken away to show the construction more clearly. Fig. 2 is a section on the line :c Fig. l.
Like letters of reference indicate the same parts in both figures.
The letter A indicates the body of the stocking, which in the present instance is knitted in a continuous length and properly shaped to conform to the limb of the wearer, being preferably of such length as to extend up over the thigh and constitute acomplete limb-covering, enabling' the under nether garments t0 be dispensed with when desired. The'hem B at the top is preferably formed in the process of knitting and presents no raw edges. In other words, both the outer and inside portions of the hem unite iny one single fabric at the lower edge. On the outer side of the stocking the two thicknesses of fabric forming the hem are widened upward, forming a supporting-extension C, the lower edges of both thicknesses being joined in with the body of the stocking to resist strain andprevent undue wear, dre. The supporting-extension is preferably tapered or narrowed down toward the upper portion, and at the top is provided with a button-hole strip D, of any relatively strong material, in
Vwhich are formed two or more button-holes d,
adapted to fasten over buttons on the corset or other upper garment of the wearer.
Stockings constructed .i-n accordance with this invention will be found convenient, and
-by dispensing with the injurious and complicated supporters, garters, &c., will add materially tO the personal comfort of the wearer.
By forming the supporting-extension of double thickness the same is rendered strong and is not liable to stretch and permit the stocking to get out of shape or sag down, and by forming it integral with the body of the stocking it practically adds very little to the cost of manufacture and does not have any edges to rip and tear.
It is obvious that the stocking may be made of any desired size, shape, and quality.
Havingthus described my invention, what I As an improved article of manufacture, a knitted stocking having the doubled fabric forming thehem at the top with both the lower edges united in the body of the stocking, said doubled portion of the fabric being widened on the outside and extended up, forming the securing-Hap, and attaching means at the top of the flap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
