PATENT OFFICE.
MAYER REINFELD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TROU
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters SERS.
Patent No. 623,739, dated. a rn 25, 1899-.
Application filed February 3, 1899. $erial No. 704,405. (No model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAYER REINFELD,a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Myinvention has relation to improvements in trousers; and it consists in the novel ar-' rangement and combination of parts, more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims. l
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the upper portion of the garment. Fig. 2 is a similar view after the same has been put on by the wearer; and Fig. 3 is a frontyiew,
. of the trousers, the lining being partly broken away to expose one of the elastic tongues carried by the waistband.
The object of my invention is to construct a pair of trousers which willentirely dispense with the use of buttons and buckles and suspenders to hold up the trousers; but in lieu thereof I substitute an elastic waistband, with certain accessories by which a snug fit is produced over the hips and waist.
The invention is specially applicable to workingmen and laborers, who are obliged to stand up during a greater portion of the time, and to bicyclers, who generally wear a belt to support the trousers. My present invention dispenses with the use of such belt.
In detail the device may be described as follows:
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body of the trousers, and 2 the waistband, which in the present instance is made of suitable elastic materialsuch, for instance, assuspender-braces are generally made of, or web-elastic. Interposed between the waistband and the upper portion of the trousers, in the rear thereof, and extending from the outer seam of one leg to the corresponding seam of the other leg is a triangular strip .3, along whose upper edge are cut slits 4 5 5, the central slit 4 being substantially vertical and the slits 5 5 inclined thereto. Depending from and either secured to, as shown, or formed integrally with the elastic waistband are elastic tongues 6, formed of the'same material as the waistband, the tongues covering the slits 4 5 5 out in the strip 3 and being stitched to the latter around the slits. -The but when the trousers are put on the waistband and the tongues stretch to snugly fit over the waist and hips, the stretching of the tongues causing the slitsto open out, as seen in Fig. 2, in which 7 represents the body of the wearer. The slits 4 5 5 and tongues 6, covering the same, are necessary to secure a neat: fit about the hips of the wearer, the tongues stretching and the slits opening out according to the contour of that portion of the body of thewearer, and while the strip 3 is herein shown as made of a single piece it is obvious that the'same might be made of two or more sections. It is apparent, too, that the device might be altered in other particulars without departing from the spirit of the lesser-i The present invention is applicable not only to mens trousers, but might be equally applied to ladies skirts or similar apparel.
: Having described my invention, what I claim'isl. Apair of trousers comprisingabody portion, an upper or terminal elastic waistband, elastic tongues depending from the lower edge of the band at the rear thereof, a triangular strip interposed between the rear of the waistband and the body portion, and extending from the outer seam of one leg to that of the other leg, 3. series of slits cut from the upper edge of said strip, the several tongues being stitched to said triangular strip and covering the slits thereof, the parts operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Apair of trousers comprising a body portion, an elastic waistband, elastic tongues depending from the lower edge of the band at the rear thereof, a triangular strip interposed between the rear of the waistband and the body portion, and extending from the outer seam of one leg to that of the other leg, slits cut from the upper edge of saidstrip, one slit at the middle of the strip, and one on each side thereof, the outer slits being incliiled toward the middle slit, the tongues being stitched to the said triangular strip and covering the slits thereof, the parts operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MAYER REINFELD.
\Vitnesses EMIL STAREK,
slits are nermally closed, as shown in Fig. 1;
