This invention relates generally to wearing apparel and more particularly to the combination in trousers for men and boys of a tongue fly with the waist band, right and left fly, and a utility pocket in the tongue fiy.

A primary object of this invention is to provide a utility pocket which is completely hidden, and

' thus made appropriate for the carrying of valuables, the devices functioning therefore, to take the place of a safety belt.

Another object of this invention is to provide a utility pocket which is adapted to be fastened closed and which is relatively accessible to the wearer.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a utility pocket in trousers which is incorporated in a tongue fly, the tongue fly having a dual purpose, since it functions as auxiliary to the regular vertical fly fastening of the trousers as well as supporting the pocket structure.

And a last object to be mentioned specifically is to provide a utility pocket in a tongue fly construction in trousers which is relatively inexpensive and practicable to manufacture and which will not interfere with the provision of conventional waist band and side pocket structures.

With these objects definitely in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of elements and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail in the specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this application, and in which:

Figure l is a three dimensional view of an upper portion of a pair of trousers with this invention operatively combined therewith, the conventional vertical fly structure being opened partially to disclose the tongue fly construction;

Figure 2 is a similar view, taken from the rear side of the trousers, a portion of the material at the back of the trousers being broken away;

Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view, taken subtantially upon the line 4-4 in Figure 5; and

Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view, taken from the inside of a pair of trousers with this invention therein, and showing a slightly modified form of this invenion, in which the slide fastener is replaced by a button and button hole.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, this invention is designed for use with an environment including a pair of trousers having aright front portion 6, a left front portion 8, a waist band generally indicated by the numeral I0, together with a right fly generally indicated at I2 and a left fly similarly indicated at I4. This conventional fly structure embodied in the elements I2 and I4 is fastened by slide fastener means indicated at I6 and I8, or otherwise as the manufacturer may prefer. Auxiliary fastener means may also be provided as represented by the button 20 and button hole 22.

A tongue fly 24 is carried by the right fly I2 and the upper edge of the tongue fly 24 will Preferably be lower than the upper edge of the front portion 8 of the trousers when the trousers are being worn so that this tongue fly is completely hidden. The tongue fly may be generally triangular in shape and will preferably-be provided with a button hole 26 adapted to coact with a button 28 fastened to the said front portion 8 of the trousers, whereby the tongue fly is held in position and the fastening means I6 and I8 associated with the conventional flies I2 and I4 is supplemented and the front portion of the trousers is given a neater appearance. The tongue fly may be constituted of two

30 and 32, preferably of the material of which the main portion of the trousers is constructed, and the inner layer 30 is slit and the slit is closable by a slide fastener generally indicated at 34, or in a modified form of the invention indicated in Figure 5, by a button 36 secured to the outer layer 32 and a button hole 38 in the inner layer 30, or a snap fastener may be employed.

It should be noted here that the tongue fly may be constructed with more than two layers, the drawings illustrating a simpler form of this invention in which only two layers are provided and stitching M! is used to secure the two layers together to form a utility pocket in the tongue fly. It should also be carefully noted that the said slit and fastening may be placed in a variety of positions in the tongue fly, the drawings illustrating a construction in which the slit is made along a horizontal line, that is, parallel to the top edge of the tongue fly, although it is conceived that the slit and fastenings may be positioned either at the side or at the bottom of the pocket in the tongue fly. In any event, the tongue fly will be secured, as by stitching 42 to the fly I 2, as best illustrated in Figure 4, in which figure the invention is clearly represented as incorporated with a trouser construction includin pockets 44 having two

46 and 48, and the waist band is represented as being comprised of two

layers

50 and 52. It will be clear from an examination of these figures, that conventional waist band and pocket construction is not interfered with by the addition of the tongue fly 24 and the provision of a pocket therein.

The operation of this invention will be clearly understood from a consideration of the foregoing description of the mechanical details thereof, taken in connection with the above recited objects and the drawings. Further description would, therefore, appear necessary.

Minor variations from the embodiments of this invention illustrated herein may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of this-invention and the scope of this invention should be determined only as limited by a proper interpretation of the terms used in the subjoined claims.

Havingdescribed the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In trousers having a waistband and fly flaps, a tongue fly comprising coextensive layers of cloth secured to one end of the waistband, the inner layer having a slit extending substantially parallel to the upper edge of the tongue fly, stitching extending below the slit and uniting the layers and thereby forming a pocket, the slit comprising the access opening of the pocket.

2. A garment having a waistband and fly flaps, a tongue fly comprising coextensive layers of cloth secured to one end of the waistband, the inner layer having a slit extending substantially parallel to the :upper edge of the tongue fly, stitching extending below the slit and uniting the layers and thereby forming a pocket, the slit comprising the access opening of the pocket, and fastening means for closing said slit.

3. In trousers having a waistband and fiy flaps, a tongue fly comprising coextensive inner and outer layers of cloth secured to one end of the waistband, one of said layers having a slit, stitching extending below the slit and uniting the layers and thereby forming a pocket, the slit comprising the access opening of the pocket, and fastening means for closing said slit.
