MAX SCHORR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX Scirelm, a subject of t-he Austro-IIungarian Emperor, residing at 59 Henry street, New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garments and is applicable for such uses as the waist band of skirts and trousers and at the knee portion of knickerbockers and similar breeches.
The object of the invention is to provide a garment closing member which is elastic, neat in appearance and thoroughly effective in operation.
The invention consists essentially in previding an article of this character comprising a plurality of elastic bodies suitably covered or inclosed and preferably so arranged that the garment closure may be gathered in plaits or folds between the points of attachment of the elastic bodies thereto.
As stated above, the invention is generally applicable to garments and for the purpose of showing one embodiment of the in vention, I have appended the attached sheet of drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a pair 0f knickerbockers having my invention applied to the knee portion thereof; Fig. 2 is an elevational view of a band or closure in completed condition; Fig. -3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but showing certain of the elastic members extending partly beyond the covering thereof; Fig. et is an elevational view of a modified form wherein button holes are provided through which the elastic may be drawn; Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
and Fig. 6 is a similar view on the lineV 6-6 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention, I preferably provide a sort of casing or pocket in which I secure, as by stitching, a plurality, preferably five, of elastic members such as rubber and then between the edges of adja cent elastics I plait or fold the material, the elastics serving not only to hold the plaits in form or shape but also to allow freedom of movement by the wearer. As will be noted from the drawing, the arrangement of plaits consists in the formation of an intermediate plait of substantial size having at Specification of Letters Patent.

each side thereof a plurality of smaller plaits. In providing a plurality of elastic members as distinguished from one single elastic, I am enabled to form neater plaits and retain them in form for a greater length of time, and furthermore even though one or more of the elastic members should through stretching lose their elasticity, the remaining members will be suitlq cient to give the whole article the elasticity which it requires for satisfactory use.
Referring specifically by reference character to the drawing, 10 designates the trouser legs of a pair of knickerbockers provided at the knee portion 11 with my improved form of closure. The members forming the pocket or containing case for the elastic are designated, respectively, 12 and 13 of which one member such as 13 may be the lining and 12 the material of the garment itself. Stitched to one of these mem bers, preferably that designated 13, is a plurality of elastic pieces 14. arranged in pairs as shown in the drawing each of which elastic pieces is adapted to have one end extended outwardly to be stitched to an edge of the plaits or folds of the cloth 12 after the folds or plaits 15 have been made; so that in this manner the elastic members 1.1 serve to retain the plaits 15 in form. The extended or drawn out part of the elastic 11i is sewed to the adjacent part of the cloth 13 so that each elastic member 14 is stitched at both ends to adjacent parts of the material. One of the end elastic pieces 14 is preferably provided with a tab 16 having a female clasp member 17 adapted to engage one of a plurality of studs 18 provided on the outer side of the cloth 13.
Referring to the modified form shown in Fig. 4, the members 12, 13 and 14 are like those shown in the other figures, but in this form of the invention, I provide the lining member 12 with slits or button holes 19, through each of which one end of an elastic member 14 is drawn, plaits then made near such slits, and the drawn out end of the member 14 is stitched to that edge of the plait which is farthest away from the end of the member 14 not drawn through the slot 19.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letterslatent isz- A garment closure comprising a waist or knee band embodying a lining member and a garment material member, said garment material being formed into an intermediate plait with oppositely disposed edges, and a plurality of smaller plaits at each side of the intermediate plait, and elastic members arranged in pairs, one end of each of the pairs of elastic members being stitched adjacent each other Within the smaller plaits and the opposite end of each of the pairs of elastic members being stitched to one of the oppositely disposed outside edges of the in- Gopes of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
termediate plait, all of said elastic members extending longitudinally of the band Whereby their elasticity is elective in the longitudinal direction of the band.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of t-Wo Witnesses.
