KATHERINE MAGDALEN DOWLING, OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS.
CHILDS WAIST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Application filed March 16, 1908. Serial No. 421,337.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE M. Dow- LING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Childs Waist, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a childs garment, and particularly to a novel form of waist.
The object of the invention is to provide a garment that shall, in a novel, practical and simple manner, combine the functions of a hose, drawers, and skirt supporter, and in which each of the suspended articles of wearing apparel may be put on or taken off without interfering with the others.
IVith the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, of a childs garment, embodying the features above enumerated, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts :Figure 1 is a view in elevation taken from the rear side of the garment. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken from the front side thereof, certain of the parts being turned or folded back to expose parts that would otherwise be concealed.
As stated, the garment of this invention is designed to perform the three fold function of a hose, drawers and skirt supporter. secure these results, the waist 1, which may be of the usual or any preferred construction, and is provided with arm loops 2, has secured to its rear side, on each side of the arm openings, two pairs of straps 3, which may be constructed of any suitable textile material, such as strips of muslin or of braid. The straps are free from connection with the waist from the arm holes downward, and at their free ends is secured a band 4 to which the hose supporters 5 are attached. One end of the band 4 is provided with a buttonhole 6 and its other end with a button 7, the function of these elements, as usual, being to se-v cure the band around the waist of the wearer. The inner side of the band has attached to it any desired number of buttons 8 that are engaged by the buttonholes of the drawers band.
The band 9 of the waist is provided with any desired number of buttonholes 10 that engage with the buttons on the skirt band. Secured to the outer side of the waist, and extending from one end to a point adjacent to the other end is a fly 11 that will operate to conceal the waist-band buttons. This fly, as shown in Fig. 2, is secured only along one edge at 12, thereby to leave it free to be turned back or lifted when the buttonholes 10 are to be engaged with the buttons of the skirt. The reason for making the fly of less length at one end than the waist band is to facilitate the buttoning of the band 9 to the skirt band, and also to prevent an undue thickness of goods where the ends of the waist overlap at the back. To secure the waist upon the wearer, the usual buttons 13 and buttonholes 14 are provided.
In order to stay the suspender straps 3, and also to hold them properly spaced apart,
tapes or bands 15 are provided which are secured at their upper ends to the straps 3 and at their lower ends to the upper edge of the band 4. This latter may be made in two strips, as shown, or of a single strip of material, as found necessary or desirable.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that by the manner of constructing the waist, no objectionable expense is added to its production, and, further, that it may be readily washed and laundered as with ordinary waists in common use.
I claim 1. The combination with a waist provided at its lower edge with a band having buttonholes and with a fly covering the band, of a second band carrying drawers engaging buttons and hose supporting tabs, and straps connected to the last named band and to the waist.
2. The combination with a waist provided at its lower edge with a band having buttonholes and with a fly to cover one side of the band, of asecond band carrying drawers engaging buttons and hose supporting tabs, straps connecting the last-named band with the upper portion only of the waist, and spacing tapes connecting the straps and the second-named band.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
KATHERINE MAGDALEN DOWLING.
