ADOLPH BERNSTEIN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
SKlRT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,458, dated April 18, 1899.
I Application filed February 24,1898. Serial No. 671,495. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPH BERNSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment -Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved garment supporter or suspender possessing such characteristic features of construction that a waist-belt supported by shoulder-straps serves to support or suspend trousers, drawers, a skirt, petticoat, stockings, and garters.
To accomplish this object, my invention consists in the features of construction and in the combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved garment supporter or suspender. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View taken on the line Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3 y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the toothed plate for securing the ends of the elastic rings.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The numeral 1 indicates a waist-belt having its ends adapted to be fastened together bya button 3 and loop at or other suitable devices. The waist-belt is supported through the medium of shoulder-straps 2, connected with the The belt is provided at the rear with a loop 5 and near the front or end portions with similar loops 5, which arepreferably secured between the body of the belt and a lining 8 by sewing or stitching; but in addition thereto they are secured by the riveted button-heads A A A applied to the belt near the upper edge thereof. The sides or hip portions of the belt are also provided with buttons A which, in connection with the buttons before mentioned, constitute an upper row of buttons. The
belt is also provided with a lower row of buttons B, B and B preferably applied to the depending lower endsof the tapes 9, secured to the belt. The two rows of buttons serve,
respectively, to support trousers, drawers, a I
skirt, petticoat, stockings, and garters. The rear portion of the shoulder-straps 2 is engaged with an elastic ring 6, loosely connected with the belt through the medium of the rear loop 5, and the front extremities of the two shoulder-straps are detachably engaged with similar elastic rings 6, also connected with the belt by thefront loops 5. The front ends of the shoulder-straps are detachably connected with the front elastic rings 6 by any ordinary cast-offs or hooks, as represented in the drawings. The rings 6 are preferably formed of sections of elastic cord, each section having its extremities engaged and clasped by a'toothed plate 7, Fig. 4, bentinto tubular form around the cord ends and subsequently encircled by the loops, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3.
The front buttons A and B are in alinement one above another, as are also the buttons A B and A B and all the buttons are permanently secured in position, so that they are always in placeand cannot become accidentally displaced or lost.
The rings 6 are elastic for the purpose of rendering them susceptible of yielding or stretching during varying movements of the wearer, whereby the shoulder-straps will correspondingly yield, and a comfortable and neatly-fitting garment-supporter is produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- V 1. In a garment-supporter, the combination with a belt, and shoulder-straps for supporting the same, of strips bent to form loops the ends of which are in contact with each other and with the belt, elastic rings extending through said loops to which the shoulderstraps are attached, and buttons whose shanks extend through said belt and through the ends of said strips, the said buttons serving as a means of attachment for the garment, as a means for holding said loops closed and as a means for securing said loops to the belt, substantially as described.
2. In a garment-supporter, the combination with a belt, and shoulder-straps for supporting the same, of loops secured to said belt, strips of elastic material bent to form rings IOG which extend through said loops and toothed my hand in the presence of two subscribing gage said rings, as and for the purpose deplates bent to embrace the ends of said strips, Witnesses. the said plates being encircled by said loops and the said shoulder-straps adapted to en- ADOLPH BEBNSTEIN' i Vitnesses: i \V.
