SUSPENDERS.
SPEClFIGATION forming pat of Letters Patent No. 698,085, dated April 22, 1902.
Application filed September 16, 1901. Serial No. 75,457.v (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED K. WANDER and RICHARD DALMAR, citizens of the United States,.residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Suspenders, (Case No. 1%) of which the following is a full', clear, concise, and exact description.
Our invention relates to trousers-supports; and its object is to provide Suspenders which may be worn either in the usual way with the crossed ends fastened to the two buttons at the back of the trousers-band or with said crossed ends brought around under the arms of the wearer and fastened to the front ends, which are in turn buttoned to the trousers at the side seams thereof.
We will describe our invention more particularly by reference to the accompanying drawings, and the features or combinations which we regard as novel will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure l illustrates the manner in which the suspenders'are worn, showing the crossed ends in the back brought around under the arms of the wearer and fastened to suitable buttons on the front ends, which are in turn designed to be fastened to buttons on the sides of the trousers-band. We have also shown in dotted lines another way of wearing the Suspenders, with the crossed ends fastened to the usual two buttons at the back of the trousers. Fig. 2 is a detail View showing one of the ends of the Suspenders equipped with the metalli-c loop-fastener in position to be attached to one of the buttons on the inside of the trousers-band. A button is shown in dotted lines under two layers of fabric, which we may assume to be the shirt and drawers. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing more clearly the manner of fastening. Fig. ,4 is a detail View showing how the front and rear ends of the Suspenders may be fastened together, to be worn as shownin full lines in Fig. 1.
Our improved Suspenders comprise two straps a a, adapted to be passed over the shoulders ot' the wearer, crossing each other in the back and fastened to one another at the point of crossing by an adjustable ring b, which is well known in the art and which ordinary trousers-buttons on the outside of i the trousers-band. When, however, the suspenders are to be worn underneath the shirt, we prefer to provide a special button d, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, said button having a small head, so that the loops may be fastened to the buttons over the interposed fabric of the shirt and drawers, as shown most clearly in Fig. The loop fasteners are shaped to provide a narrow slot at the bottom, in which the shank of the button may be fastened, andan enlarged opening at the upperportion, through which the head of the button may be passed, this opening being large enough to permit the Suspenders to be fastened tothe buttons over the interposed fabric of the shirt and drawers, as shown in Fig. 3.
The loops'on the front ends of the suspenders are provided with buttons c, to which the loops on the rear ends may be buttoned, as shown in Figa. When thus fastened together, the front ends of the straps ct may be secured to buttons at the sides of the trousers, and each strap then passes up in front of the arm, over the shoulder, and diagonally over the back, crossing the corresponding portion of the other strap and having its other end se cured to the front end of the other strap, which hangs under the opposite arm of the wearer. These straps may be of the elastic material which is used for almost all ordinary Suspenders and may be provided with the ordinary means for adjusting their length to suit the igure of the wearer, one end of each strap being looped in the fastener and passed back along itself to a suitable sliding buckle. The arms of the loop care preferably of wire and are prevented from spreading by clasps, these clasps of the front loops servingas supports for the buttons e e, as shown. Ordinary buttons may be provided both on the inside and outside of the band ofthe trollsers. However, the loops may, if desired, be attached to the ordinary buttons on the outside of the band, though the Suspenders are worn under the shirt, the shirt beingloosened and folded over the top of the trousers-band.
XVhile the improved Suspenders of our invention are particularly useful in that they may be worn underneath an ordinary shirt, as above described, they will also be of value in Connection with the garment known as the shirt-waist. They may also, if desired, be worn over the shirt and fastened to the ordinary buttons on the outside of the trousers-band. W'hen adjusted, as shown in full lines in Fig. l, to support the trousers only at the sides, they will permit greatfreedom of movement to the wearer while securely supporting the trousers, and will thus be well adapted for use by those who take part in athletic exercises.
Having thus described our invention, we claiml. The combination in apairof Suspenders, of the webbing a d crossing at the back, the adjustable ring` ZJ through which the webbingr passes at the place of crossing, the metallic loop-fasteners c c, adapted to itthe trousersbuttons, the loops or openings of said fasteners being keyhole-shaped, the two arms of the loops beingheld from spreading by clasps, and buttons e e provided upon the clasps of the front loops, to which buttons the rear loops are adapted to be buttoned, whereby the Suspenders may be worn to support the trousers either at the front and back, or, by buttoning the rear loops to the special buttons e e, to support the trousers from the front loops only, said front loops being fastened at the sides of the trousers, substantially as` and for the purpose specified.
2. Asuspender comprising straps c1, acrossing at the back, and having fasteners at the end adapted to fit the trousers-buttons, and a special button e provided on the fasteners at the corresponding ends of both straps, the fasteners at the other ends being adapted to 'fasten either to the buttons of the trousers or to the special buttons e on the first-inentioned fasteners, whereby the Suspenders may be worn to support the trousers either at the front and back or at the sides only, as set forth.
ln witness whereof we hereunto subscribe our names this lsth day of September, A. D. 1001.
