GARMENT-SUPPORTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters I'atent No. 722,741, dated March 17, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. NYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Garment- Supporter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garment-supporters designed more particularly for supporting undergarments, and has for its object the production of a device which will be sus pended from the back part of the upper garment at or near the shoulders and pass downward and around the body to the front and be attached to the garment, whereby all of the weight and strains are borne across v the back, leaving the shoulders free from. strains and tension and assistingin keeping the body erect and at the same time removing the Weight of the clothing from the back of the neck.

Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment in the form of an adjustable pad or other support across the front and connected to the back-supports leading from the back of the garment and adapted to be regulated to suit the convenience of the wearer.

Other novel features of the invention will appear in the annexed description and be specified in the claims following.

In the drawings illustrative of the invention, Figure 1 is a rear view of a figure with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view from the front. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a modification in the construction. Fig. 4 is a detached detail, illustrating another modification in a portion of the structure. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating another modification in the structure. Fig. 6 represents a modification of the device in complete applied form, the wearer being shown in dotted lines.

This improvement comprises a harness-like structure attached to the rear upper part of an upper undergarment, such as a dress-shirt, or to the undervest, or to any suitable upper undergarment, and thence diverging in two parts and passed around the body and attached to the lower garment at the front, so that the weight of the garments are borne across the back, leaving the shoulders free Serial No. 116,114. The different parts of the structure will preferably be wholly or partially of elastic material and suitably united by clips and provided with suitable hooks or buttons or buttonholes to enable it to be properly connected to the garments and readily detached therefrom.

For the purpose of illustration the device is shown in the drawings employed in connection with an ordinary dress-shirt, (represented at 10,) with the usual neckband 11 and the usual shoulder-gores 12 13, while the nether garment is indicated at 14, with the waistband at 15.

The improved supporter will preferably be attached to the shoulder-gores 12 13, and to this end the latter are provided with suitable means for the attachment of the device, such as loops 16 17, provided with buttonholes.

The structure comprising the supporter consists in a transverse strap 18, having clips 19 20 at the ends, the clips provided with loops 21 22, respectively, extending upward therefrom, as shown.

Two straps 23 24 are provided, preferably of elastic material, and united centrally to a clip 25, which is provided with means, such as a button 26, for attachment to a loop 27, depending from the center of the neckband 11 at the rear, as shown in Fig. 1.

The free ends of the straps 23 24 are provided with means, such as buttons 28 29, whereby they may be connected to the loops 16 17 after being passed through the loops 21 22 upon the clips 19 20, as shown.

Connected to the clips 19 20 are straps 3O 31, preferably of elastic material and adapted to be passed downward and diverging in opposite directions and connected to the undergarment 14, as by buttons 32 33 upon the waistband 15, as shown in Fig. 2.

The strap 18 may also be of elastic material, if preferred.

The lengths of the straps 18 23 24 will be so proportioned that the clips 19. 2 O' will come about opposite the shoulder-blades ofthe wearer, so that the support-er will conform readily to the curves of the back and prevent any annoyance to the wearer.

If preferred, the clip 25 may be arranged to be connected directly to the collar-button 34 instead of to a separate loop 27, as shown and adjusted.

in Fig. 4; but this would not be a departurel from the principle of the invention, as it would not afiect the operation of the device or produce any different effect or results.

Under some circumstances the straps 23 24 might be coupled directly to the clips 19 20, as shown in Fig. 3, instead of being passed upward to the clip 25; but this would not be a departure from the principle of the invention or sacrifice any of its advantages, as the results produced would be substantially the same in both forms of the structure.

The form of structure shown in Fig. 3 might be used to advantage in connection with some forms of garments and might be preferred by some persons over the form shown in Fig. 1.

The device thus constructed and applied as shown, it will be noted, brings the whole downward strain upon the back of the garment 10 and relieves the shoulders of the wearer from the strains and weight and assists in keeping the body erect and removes the weight of the clothing from the back of the neck.

When employed for supporting ladies garments, a pad 35 may be provided and supported by a belt, preferably of elastic material, and represented at 36 and connected by its ends, as by buttons 37 38, to the pad and passing around the body. Additional straps, also of elastic material,will be connected, as by buttons 39 40,t0 the pad, as represented at 41 42, and be passed around the body in opposite directions and connected to the straps 30 31 near the clips 19 20, as shown in Fig. 5. This pad 35 forms abdominal support and also provides for the attachment of the hosesupporters, (represented at 43 44 in Fig. 5.) The pad 35 will be provided with a series of the buttons 37 38 39 40, so that the straps 36 41 42 and hose-supporters 43 44 may be adjusted thereon when required. By this simple means the support-er may be adapted to any size or form of garment and adapted to anysized person and may be very readily applied While the loops 1.6, 17, and 27 are the preferable means of attaching the supporter to the garment 10, I do not wish to be limited in any manner to such means of attachment, as other suitable means might be readily devised.

The various straps and clips maybe moditied in minor particulars without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

The clips and straps may be of any fanciful or ornamental design and will be made in various patterns and the elastic straps in various colors to suit the taste.

Arranging the straps 23 24 through the loops 21 22 provides for a free movement between the straps 18 30 31 and the straps 23 24 to cause the supporter to yield tothe movement of the wearer and to adapt itself to his difierent positions, so that there will be no binding or unequal strains in the structure when in use. This is therefore an important feature of the invention and adds materially to its usefulness and efficiency.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A garment-supporter comprising downwardly and forwardly extending connected straps adapted to pass under the arms of the wearer, and means for connecting the extremities of said straps respectively to the back of an upper garment and the front of a nether garment.

2. In a garment -supporter, downwardly and forwardly converging straps, means for connecting said straps at their upper ends, means for connecting said upper ends to the back of an upper garment near the shoulders, and means for connecting the lower ends of said straps to a nether garment at the front.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a garmentsupporter comprising a transverse band, straps leading upwardly from the ends of said band and adapted to be attached to the back of the upper garment near the shoulders, and straps leading from the ends of said transverse band downwardly and forwardly and adapted to be attached to the lower undergarment at the front, substantially as described.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a garment-supporter comprising a transverse band having loops at the ends, straps united at their ends and adapted to be connected to the back of the upper garment and movably engaging said loops and adapted to be connected by their other ends to said garment near the shoulders, and straps leading from the said transverse band downwardly and forwardly and adapted to be connected to a nether garment at the front, substantially as described.

5. A garment-supporter comprising spaced straps having means connected therewith for attachment to the back of the upper garment near the shoulders, means for connecting them to a nether garment at the front thereof, and a transverse band coupled at its ends to said spaced straps.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a garmentsupporter comprising spaced straps adapted to be attached to the back of the garment near the shoulders and having means for connecting them to a nether garment at the front, and a pad connected by diverging straps respectively to said spaced leadingstraps, substantially as described.

7. In a garment supporter, a transverse band having loops at the ends, straps united at their ends and adapted to be connected to the center of the back of the upper garment and movably engaging said loops and adapted to be connected by their other ends to said garment near the shoulders, straps leading from the said transverse band downwardly and forwardly and adapted to be connected to a nether garment at the front, and a pad verging straps respectively to said downwardly and forwardly leading straps, and a belt detachably connected by its ends to said pad and adapted to encircle the person of the wearer, substantially as described.
