A. A. & G. L. GILLETT.
GARMENT SUPPORTBR.
No. 448,223. Patented Mar. 17, 1891.
lnrrninrnrrr ANNA A. G LLETT AND GARLAND L. GILLETT, OF MILVAUKEE, TISCONSIN GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,223, dated March 1'7', 1891.
Application filed June 16,1890- Serial No. 355,530. (No model.)
T0 aZZ wiz/0m, it may cmwern:
Be it known that we, ANNA A. GILLETT and GARLAND L. GILLETT, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garmcnt-Supporters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it-pertains to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawing's, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The main objects of our invcntion are greater convenience and cconomy in the manufacture, commercial handling, and use of this class of articles, ease and convenience in application and adj ustment, and to relieve the hips and lower limbs of the support of clothing, thereby allowing freedom of movement and promoting` health and comfort.
It consists of certain novel features in the construction and arrangement of the parts, hereinafter described7 and pointed out in the cla'ims.
lu the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several fig'urcs.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved device. Fig. 2 is a View, on an enlarg'ed soale, of the reverse side of the suspender-buckle, a portion of one of the hippieces, and of the branching' suspender-ends, showing` the method of attaching` the same to the buckle; and Fig'. 3 is a similar view on an enlarged Scale, showing; the method of attachin g the hip-pieces and the rear suspender-ends to the shoulder-bands of the suspenders.
A A represent the shoulder-bands of a pair of ordinary snspenders, joined or crossed in the usual way at the back a-nd provided in the rear with branching' ends B and in front with branching' ends or straps O C, which are adjustably attaohed to the shoulder-hands A A by buckles c o, in the usual manner.
D D are hip-pieces7 preferably formed of a single piece of round cord and stitched to the shoulder-straps A A at the back with the loop or strap a, by which the ends of said shoulderhands are joined, and the branching' ends B B are attached thereto, as shown in Fig'. 3. At
its ends this cord forming` the hip-pieces is preferably provided with rings cl d, as shown in Figs. l and 2, by which they are fastened upon the hooks of the suspender-buckles c c, and adjusted, together with the front suspender-ends C O, upon the shoulder-bands A A. These hip-pieces are so forrncd and attached to the suspenders to hang' at each side over the hips of the wearer and draw directly through the shoulder-straps A A of the suspenders over the Shoulders.
E E are side bands or sections, pref'erably composed partly of inelastic portions e e and partly of elastic portions e' e', the latter being` attached to the 'former by' means of buckles .82 82 or other suitable means, by which the said side hands may be adj usted in length to suit persons of different sizcs and stockings of different lengths. Branching` terminal straps F F, provided with suitable fastening's f for attaohment to the tops of the stocking's, are seoured to the lower ends of the side bands or sections E E. At their upper ends the side hands or sections E E are attached to the hippieces D D by means of self'adjusting sliding fastenings G G, which may be conveniently forrned of wire coiled to form sleeves, through which the cord const-ituting the hip-pieces loosely passes, and loops for the attaehment of the side bands or sections E E. By this means of attaching' the side sections E E to the hip-pieces D D they are kept in proper position over the thighs, the weight or pull of the stockings is equally distributed through both branches of the hip-pieces to the front and back of the shoulder-bands of the suspenders, and the latter are prevented from being pulled off from the Shoulders.. The supporters and snspcnders are also relieved of excessive or uncqual strain when the body or limbs of the wearer assume various positions.
By formiirg,` the hip-pieces D D of a single cord 01' piece of material a single fastening' suffices to secure both to the back of the suspenders, and greater security is attained than would be if the hip-pieces were made and attached separately.
Great convenience and economy in the man ufaoture, in the commercial handling, and in the individual use of the article arise i'roin combining' the hose-snpporters with the, suspenders, both of which are provided with suitable means of adj ustment to adapt them to persons of different 'sizes and to stockings and clothing of various lengths.
By connecting the hip-pieces at their fron ends with the front fastenings or ends of the suspenders they are adj'asted when the shoulder-bands are taken up or let out.
The hip-pieces D D may be lnade of tape or hands and attached permanently at the front ends to the shoulder-bands A A of the suspenders above the buckles c c. In short, Various changes in the details ot' construction of the article may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Although specially designed for boys7 use, our combined suspenders and hose-supporters may be conveniently worn by adults With bicycle suits or other costumes einbracing' kneebreeches and long hose.
V'Ve claim- 1. In a garment-supporter, the depending' hippieces adjustably connected with the suspenders at the front and provided with side pieces having at their lower ends hose-attaching devices, substanti'ally as and for the pu rposes set fort-h;
2. In a garment-supporter, the depending hipfpieces adapted to be connected to the suspenders and provided with side pieces having at their lower ends hose-attaching de- Vices and at their upper ends a sliding connection with the hip-pieces, snbstant-ially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. Garrnent -supporters consisting' of depending' hip-pieces connected with the suspenders in front and behind, their connections therewith in front being adj ustable, and side pieces having` self-adjnsting sliding connections at their upper en'ds with said hip-pieces and provided at their lower ends with suitable fastening's for attachment to the hose, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testinlony thatwe claim the foregoing as our own we ai'fix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
