UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK KERN, OF MATTOON, ILLINOIS.
- GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,893, dated April 18, 1893.
Application filed January 4, 1893. Serial No. 457,242. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK KERN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Mattoon, in the county of Coles and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to garment supporters and under-waists.
The objects of my improvements are to provide a skeleton under-waist having stocking supporters secured thereto, and a waist-band from which skirts and other like apparel may be fastened, the whole being supported from the shoulders so as to carry the weight of the garments in a healthful and hygienic manner.
Figure 1 represents a perspective front view of my invention. Fig. 2 isa perspectiverear View of the same.
In the drawingsA represents two shoulder straps which pass from the waist-band in front up over the shoulders and down tothe waist-band in the rear.
B represents the waist-band which extends from the shoulder-straps A in front rearwardly around the waist to the opposite shoulderstrap in front.
0 represents double buckles and straps or elastic attached to the shoulder-strap in front and secured to the waist-band at their opposite ends, in line with the waist-band, so that the size of the waist may be adjusted to suit different wearers.
D represents a series of buttons upon the waist-band at the sides and rear, vertically disposed thereon in series, whereby different garments attached thereto may be independently buttoned, or buttoned at different heights.
E represents the rear body portion of the under-waist consisting of two pieces stitched to the inner opposite sides of the shoulderstraps and extending from a point at or near the shoulder-blade of the wearer down to and in line with the waist-band. These pieces E have straight meeting edges and are provided with buttons and button-holes, or other fastenings, and the outer edges are preferably curved or concave where they are stitched to the shoulder straps. a
F is a short stay-piece connecting the shoulder strap in position over the chest.
G represents the converging side straps of the stocking-sup porters, attached to the lower ends of the shoulder-straps A and joined together at their lower ends.
H are the main straps of the stocking-supporters attached to the connected-lower ends of the'straps G.
I are the double straps which are fastened to the stockings by the usual catches and are provided with a buckle at their upper ends through which the ends of the straps H are passed and by which the length is adjusted as desired.
, G are the converging straps constructed of webbing, and H are the main straps also of webbing. All of the straps constituting the garment supporter may be of elastic or nonelastic webbing.
This garment supporter is much more comfortable than the ordinary under-waist with stocking-supporters attached to the buttons as it is carefully adjusted to give the necessary support where needed and to leave the movements of the body free from annoying and unhealthful restraint.
I claim- A garment-supporter and underwaist of the character described, consisting of shoulderstraps, a front stay, a rear body portion, extending from the waist-band upwardly toward the shoulders a waistband secured to the shoulder-straps in front, adjusting straps secured to the lower end of the shoulder-straps at the rear and connecting the waistband with the same, V-shaped webbings attached at one end and forming a continuation of the rear ends of the shoulder-straps and the other ends connected with the waistband, stocking-sup porters depending from said webbing, and a vertical series of buttons upon both the waistband and the body-portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' FRANK KERN.
