Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID R. JONES, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates in general to underwear and has more particular reference to an undergarment for children. In clothing children, and particularly little girls, a waist is frequently worn in addition to the underclothing, the waist being equipped with buttons to which the childs drawers and garters are attached and by which they are supported. My invention, however, contemplates the provision of a garment in the form of a union suit to which both the drawers and the garters may be attached, thus eliminating the necessity of wearing a waist which in summertime is warm and run comfortable.

My invention also contemplates the provision of a garment of this character which will eliminate the necessity of unbuttoning two sets of buttons in order to let down the seat of the drawers and of the undergarment, which, in the present instance, is in the form of a union suit.

-Another object of my invention is to so locate the garter-supporting tabs that the pull exerted by them will be transmitted to both the front and rear shoulder straps of the garment thereby imposing a direct and comfortable pull upon the shoulders instead of a pull which has a tendency to lower the front and elevate the rear of the garment to the discomfort of the wearer.

Still another object is the provision of an undergarment having shoulder straps which are capable of adjustment so that they may be lengthened or shortened to accommodate the garment to wearers of different sizes. For the purpose of facilitating an understanding of my invention I have illustrated one preferred embodiment thereof on the accompanying drawings, from an inspection of which when considered in connection with the following description the invention and many of its attendant advantages should be readily understood. Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a front view of a garment embodying my invention, and

Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof.

By reference to the drawings it will be observed that the garment illustrated comprises a body portion 3, preferably cut to button up the front, and formed beneath the waist-line to provide the legs 4 of a pair of underdrawers, the garment as a whole being in the form of a union suit. The upper portion of the garment is shaped to provide a neck-opening 5 and armholes 6, and is sup ported upon the wearer by front and rear shoulder straps 7 and 8 respectively, each front strap and its companion rear strap being adjustably connected over the wearers shoulders so that the straps may be length ened or shortened to accommodate the garment to wearers of different sizes. The) structure employed for effecting this adjustment consists of a pair of buttons 9 attached to each front strap and a plurality of pairs of correspondingly positioned button holes 11 formed in each rear shoulder strap. It will be obvious that by buttoning the but tons 9 into the button holes 11 more or less remote from the ends of the rear shoulder straps the effective length of the straps may be varied to meet the comfort of the wearer.

In order that the drawers or pants which children customarily wear over such a union suit may be supported without encumbering the child with an unnecessary garment in the form of a waist I have equipped the garment with a series of drawer-supporting buttons 12 which are aranged around the waistline of the garment. It will be observed from Fig. 2 that the garment disclosed is of the drop seat variety, the upper or free edge 13 of the seat being provided with button holes 14 adapted to be engaged with but tons 15 arranged upon the back of the garment, a reinforcing strip or band 16 being preferably employed to provide a firm and secure'anchorage for the buttons.

If the drawer-supporting buttons 12 were attached to the garment at or above the waist-line it will be obvious that in order to lower the seat of the drawers it would be necessary to unbutton the drawers from these buttons 12, and in order to lower the drop seat of the union suit it would also be necessary to unbutton the buttons 15. My invention, however, provides a very handy garment by locating the drawer-simporting buttons 12 at or near the upper or free edge of the drop seat of the garment so that the seat of the drawers is supported from and is raised and lowered with the drop seat of the Patented Dec. d, 1917.

garment. It will thus be obvious that the seat of the drawers and the drop seat of the V garment may be lowered simultaneously by simply unbuttoning the buttons 15.

Another feature of my invention resides in the location of the garter-supporting tabs or loops 17 to which the upper ends of the childs garters are attached. In garments up in the rear. Such an arrangement and its results are manifestly uncomfortable to the wearer. I have, with a view to overcoming the objectionable feature mentioned located the garter-supporting tabs 17 directly beneath the arm-holes and in close proximity to the side seams of the garment, so that the pull exerted by the tabs is transmitted to both the front and rear shoulder straps and the weight is therefore carried evenly by the front and rear straps with the result that there is no tendency for the garment to pull down in front and up in the rear. This arrangement of the garter tabs contributes materially to the comfortableness of the garment. r

It is believed that my invention and many of its inherent advantages will be understood from the foregoing without further description but it should be obvious that the size, shape and proportion of various elements ofthe. garment are capable of considerable modification and variation without departing from the essence of the invention as defined by the following claims.

I claim:

1. A childs undergarment, comprising a union suit having a dropseat adapted to be detachably fastened along its free edges to the body of the garment, and drawer-supporting means secured to said drop seat adjacent to said free edge thereof whereby the seat of a pair of drawers attached to said supporting means is raised and lowered by and with said drop seat.

2. A childs under-garment, comprising a union suit having a drop seat detachably fastened at its free edge to the body of the garment along the waist-line thereof, and drawer-supporting means carried by said garment below said waist-line, said means at the back of the garment being attached to and carried by said drop seat.
