Description
FebZ, 11931. A. D. CRAIG 1,794,349
UNDERGARMENT Filed Sept. 11, 1930 7 ail/07'.
Patented Feb. 24, 119311 UNHTE STATES ALLAN D. CRAIG, OF WATEBTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS DALBY COMPANY, 01: WATELRTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS UNDERGARMENT Application filed September 11, 1930. Serial No. 481,211.
This invention relates to undergarments and although designed with special reference to the needs of children it is equally applicable to garments for older persons of both 5 sexes.
An object of the invention is the provision of a garment of the foregoing character having an integral drop seat flap held in normal position by elastic means thereby eliminating buttons and other fastening means.
. A urther object of the invention isthe provision of a garment which may be made if desired from one piece of tubular material having a drop seat flap integral therewith.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a knitted or woven garment having I lateral strctchability without longitudinal stretchability.
Other objects of the invention will be more spfnecifically pointed out and described hereina er.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of an undergarment constructed in accordance with my invention and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
My invention contemplates broadly an undergarment made from tubular knitted or woven material having its rear portion cut away and its front portion at the bottom extended to form a drop seat, elastic means being provided for holding the drop seat normally in closed position. In the drawings are shown three forms of garments all within the broad scope of the invention but characterized by specific differences in construction.
Referring to the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing,
10 designates the body portion of the garment preferably made of tubular knitted or woven material with the wales running longitudinally to permit lateral but not longitudinal stretchability. The upper portion of the garment is provided with a pair of supporting shoulder straps 12 of any suitable form and material but preferably formed of folded binding material 14 and 16 stitched together at their edges. The folded binding material or tape 14 is used for finishing the edge body portion.
of the neck portion of said body 10 and the binding 16 for finishing the edges of the arm holes, the binding in both cases being secured along its folded edges to the respective portions of the body 10 by elastic or other suitable stitching 18 and the bindings 14 and 16 are joined together to form the shoulder straps. The edges of the neck portion and the arm holes may, however, be finished in any suitable manner but when binding tape as shown is used, the wales of the tape should run longitudinally the tape to prevent stretching in that direction.
Preferably, the body portion 10 is provided with a pair of leg openings 20, the edges thereof being finished with folded binding tape 22 secured thereto by elastic stitching 24, in a manner similar to the finishing of the neck and arm openings.
At its bottom, the front of the body portion 10 is extended to form a drop seat 26 (Fig. 2) and the rear of the body 10 is cut away at 28 just below the waist line. The body 10 in its crotch portion may be reenforced by a crotch-piece 30 secured thereto by elastic stitching 32 and 34. In this form of garment, the drop seat 28 is fastened by stitching on each side to the leg-binding 22 at the point 36, the sides of the dropseat being otherwise free of attachment to the On each side the drop-seat is extended in approximately triangular form and these extensions 38 are permanently connected in the front by a tape 40, preferably non-stretchable. The drop-seat is cut full so as to fit around the hips of the wearer loosely and its upper edge is provided with a hem 42 within which is enclosed a suitable elastic 44 fastened at its two ends to the ends of the tape 40. The elastic 44 encircling the waist of the wearer serves to hold the drop seat in a normal closed position yet permitting it to be dropped when required by merely stretching the elastic, all buttons and other fastening means being thereby eliminated.
The garment may be provided with a cord tape 70 inserted in the neck binding and adapted to be tied in front for restricting the neck opening after the garment has been put on by the wearer.
It will be observed that the garment of my invention is of simple construction and that the same may be used without requiring the manipulation of buttons or other fastening means when the seat is dropped. This feature makes the garment especially adapted for use by children.
It is to be understood that my invention may be embodied in other forms of construction than the one herein shown and described all Within the scope of the following claim.
What I claim is:
A one piece undergarment comprising a cylindrical body portion having its front portion extended downwardly and provided in its side edges with cutout ortions, the lower part of said extension eing turned upwardly to form a drop seat and being permanently secured to the upper part of said extension at the ends only of said cutout portions to form leg openings, the sides of said upper portion of said extension or drop seat being entirely free above the leg openings, and said sides being extended forwardly to embrace loosely the hips of the wearer and being connected together at the front of the garment, and said drop seat portion being provided with an elastic at its upper edge for encircling the waist of the wearer to hold the said drop seat normally in a closed position yet permitting it to be dropped when desired. a
In witness whereof, I hereunto set my hand this eighth day of September, 1930.
ALLAN D. CRAIG.
