Description
Aug. 18, 1936.
B. M. DICKSON I INFANT s GARMENT Filed April 6, I935 Patented Aug. 18, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an infant's garment, one of the objects being to provide an adjustable garment which serves both as a band and a shirt, there being simple and efficient means 5 whereby the garment can readily be adjusted to the infant and secured Without requiring the use of buttons.
A still further object is to provide a garment which is adjustable both at the shoulders and the waist and has an extension apron constituting a protector for the abdomen and also affording means whereby the diaper can be attached readily whether folded so as to be either oblong or triangular,
A further object is to provide a garment of this character which can be laundered readily and is in the nature of a one-piece garment.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the front portion of the garment with the parts positioned as when secured about the body of an infant.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the rear portion of the garment.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the garment unfolded, portions being broken away.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, l and 2 designate overlying thicknesses of i0 fabric which are co-extensive and are stitched or otherwise joined together at their edges as shown at 3. These two layers of fabric thus form a one-piece garment. The garment comprises a body portion 4 the upper edge of which is bowed Q5 inwardly as at 5 to form the neck portion and from the ends of this neck portion are extended tongues 6 constituting shoulder straps. These straps diverge upwardly as shown.
Arm receiving recesses l are provided in the 50 side portions of the body under the inner portions of the shoulder straps 6 and the bottom edges of these recesses curve upwardly and merge into short tabs 8.
The sides of the body curve downwardly and 55 laterally from the tabs 8 as shown at 9 and terminate in ends In the edges of which merge into downwardly curved bottom edges II which converge toward short bottom tabs l2. These tabs, in turn, are separated by a bowed bottom edge i3. As the edges 9 and II converge outwardly 5 toward the ends l0, those portions of the body between the edges form side straps I4.
Secured to the body 4 at about the waist line and between the neck portion 5 and the edge 13 are spaced oppositely extending flaps I5 each secured along its inner edge to the body by stitches or in any other suitable manner, as shown at I6. The other edges of these flaps are free.
Adjacent to one of the flaps l5 and beneath 15 one of the recesses I is a vertical slit H the length of which is sufficient to permit the insertion therethrough of one of the side straps Normally the garment is flat as shown in Figure 3 and it will be obvious that the same can thus be easily laundered. When it is desired to place the garment on an infant the body portion is laid against the front of the body of the infant so that the arms will extend through the recesses I. The shoulder straps 6 are then brought downwardly back of the arms so as to lap the tabs 8 and after they have been adjusted properly they are fastened to the tabs 8 by means of safety pins [8. so
The side straps M are then lapped about the body, one of these straps being inserted forwardly through the slit I1 and brought around one side of the body while the other strap is brought around the other side of the body. The two straps l4 after being properly adjusted to the infant are fastened to the respective flaps 15 by means of safety pins l9.
It will be noted that when the garment is in position the lower portion of the body 4 located do between the edges H constitutes an apron 20 which serves to cover and protect the lower portion of the abdomen and at the same time this apron will maintain the tabs I2 in proper positions to be fastened to the corner portions of a diaper.
What is claimed is:
An infants one-piece garment including a body having a depending apron, portions of which constitute spaced tabs, oppositely extending elongated shoulder straps with a neck portion therebetween, tabs under and extending toward the shoulder straps and cooperating therewith to provide arm receiving recesses, said tabs and straps being proportioned to lap and receive 5 fastening means back of the shoulders of the wearer, oppositely extending side straps below and extending laterally beyond the recesses, oppositely extended tabs secured to the body adjacent the center thereof and between the side straps for attachment to the respective side straps, and a slit in the garment adjacent to one of the flaps for the reception of one of the side straps when wrapped about the body of the infant, said garment, when in use, having its side straps exposed and spaced apart at the front and extended at their ends under the respective tabs for attachment thereto.
