Description

May 13, 1930. M. E. G LE 1,758,740
GARMENT Filed March 2, 1928 \\\\\\\\\\\NllllllllllIllIlll"Ill|Ill[Ill|lllllllllllIIIHHIIIHHIIIM ATTORNEY- WITNESS:
Patented May 13, 1936 UNIED STATES MAE E. GALE, OF OWOSSO, MICHIGAN GARMENT Application filed March 2,
This invention relates to apparel and its general object is to provide a garment primarily designed for infants and children to facilitate changing whereby they can be kept dry and comfortable with very little effort, with the result the garment will promote the health and cleanliness of the child as well as save time, trouble and patience of the attendant.
A further object of the invention. is to provide a garment of the character set forth that is neat in appearance, comfortable to wear, simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a front view of one form of the garment constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view thereof.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 with the crotch member of the garment removed.
Figure l is a detail view illustrating the crotch member.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be noted that I have shown my garment in the form of an undergarment for infants, but I want it understood that it can be constructed in the form of a night garment or a play garment for infants and children. and can be also designed for adults where the occasion demands.
The garment as shown includes a body portion 1, leg portions 2 and sleeve 8, and of course the leg portions may be provided with covering for the feet of the wearer and the arm portions may include coverings for the wearers hands, it depending of course upon 1928. Serial No. 258,643.
the purpose for which the garment is constructed.
The sleeves in the form as shown are provided with reinforced free ends d and this reinforced portionmay be in the form of knitted material as will be apparent.
The lower portion of the body in the back and front of the garment as well as a large portion of the upper ends of the leg portions is centrally cut away to provide an open crotch, and this cut away portion is indicated by the reference numeral 6. The body portion of the garment opens down the front and is provided with buttons and button holes for closing the same as best shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The cut away portion 6 is closed by a crotch member 7, the form of which is best shown in Figure 4 and this crotch member includes a front flap 8 and a rear flap 9. The rear flap is considerably longer than the front flap as it is designed to extend about the back and sides of the garment for the purpose of being secured to buttons 10 arranged on the garment at the juncture of the front with the side portions as best shown in Figure 3. The back flap is provided with button holes 11 for receiving said buttons 10, and the front flap is likewise provided with button holes for receiving said buttons as suggested in Figure 1. The flaps are integrally formed with each other by an intermediate portion 12 which is provided with rounded side edges to conform to the crotch portions of the legs,
with the result the cut away portion 6 will be completely closed by the crotch member when the latter is secured to the buttons in the manner as above set forth and as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
lVhile I have shown and described the crotch member as being provided with front and rear flaps, these flaps may be reversed under certain conditions and in accordance with the desires of the user. and in this event the front flap would be disposed at the rear of the garment and the rear flap at the front, with buttons or other fastening means arranged on the garment to accommodate the flaps accordingly.
The flap 9 which I have referred to as being the rear flap is provided with a reinforced upper edge of knitted material or the like, so that it will give and conform to the shape of the wearer.
From the above description and disclosure of the drawings it will be obvious that I have provided a garment which will promote the health, comfort and cleanliness of the wearer and due to the size of the cut away portion 6 it will be obvious that the garment proper can be kept in a clean and sanitary condition for a maximum period of time with the result frequent washing will be unnecessary and the life of the garment will be prolonged. A number of the crotch members may be pro vided for each garment and the garments may be made from knitted and woven material of all kinds and grades.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A garment of the character described comprising a body portion, leg portions formed with said body portion, the front and rear of said garment as well as the leg portions being cut away through the crotch thereof and to the waist to provide a relatively large opening having arcuate sides extending to- Ward each other and in close proximity at the crotch, a crotch member to cover the opening, a rear flap and a front flap included in said crotch member, said flaps each having button holes arranged in pairs, said crotch member having inwardly directed arcuate sides to reduce the portion thereof arranged to close the opening at the crotch of the garment, buttons arranged in pairs upon opposite sides of the front of the garment to be received in the button holes of the flaps, and said rear flaps being directed about the sides of the garment to arrange the button holes thereof in the front of the garment whereby the crotch member can be readily removed.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature.
MAE ELIZABETH GALE.
