This invention relates to wearing apparel, and more particularly is directed to a combination of under and overgarments for childrens outdoor Wear which permits the ready removal of one overgarment having an undergarment portion to leave another overgarment and the undergarments intact for indoor wear service, said combination providing a proper fitting and comfortable apparel which is free from bulkiness.

Among the objects of the invention is to generally improve wearing apparel of the character described which shall comprise few and simple parts, which shall facilitate the dressing and removal thereof, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, whichshall form :neat appearing, readily adjustable garments that are easily made to conform to proportions of various individuals differing from those normally fitted by the standard sized apparel, and which shall be practical and efficient to a high degreein use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and inpart hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the-scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a child dressed in the wearing apparel embodying the invention, showing the neat, form-fitting, exterior 35 appearance thereof.

Referring now to the drawings, the invention is seen applied to childrens wearing apparel and is here shown as being more particularly adapted to be embodied in the dress of boys or girls between the ages of two and eight years.

In Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, a child C is shown dressed with underclothes, some worn next to the body, such for example as a so-called union suit I, inner waist II worn over said union suit in, stockings l2 which cover the legs of the child below the suit i6, stocking supporters l3 anchored at Ha to the waist ll, said supporters I 3 carrying suitable fasteners l3a which extend down to secure the upper end of the stocking l2, and shoes Hi, all of the above described clothing being worn, as shown in Fig. 3 in the well understood manner.

As seen from Figure 4, the invention includes an outergarment comprising shorts which are in the form of trousers having the leg portions 26a cut short to terminate above the knees of the child C and are preferably made of a length to extend a slight distance down beyond leg portions Illa of the union suit Ill and to cover the tops [2a of the stockings i2 and the support fasteners 13a. Said shorts 20 may be made with a waist band 20b having a rear midportion 20c thereof provided with suitable adjustment means, 2

hookless slide fastener may be used as a closure 3 for said fly 28d. At the innerside of each end portion of the waist band 202;, between the fly 20d and the waist gathered section 20, there may be provided suitable detachable fastener means, such as female parts 22 of snap fasteners. shorts may be formed of a suitable textile material and be otherwise constructed in the Well understood manner.

As seen from Fig. 5, the invention also includes leggings 3!] each being used partly as an outer and partly as an inner garment. Said leggings 30 are fashioned at their lower ends 30a to cover the upper part of the shoes l4 and extend upward at 3012 for exterior service to the region of the knee of the wearer where the lower end of the leg portion 2a of the shorts 2B terminate. Said leggings 30 each have an upper end extension 300 for inner service made continuous with the exterior service portion 30b. Each inner service portion 300 extends up within a leg portion 200; of the shorts 20 when the latter and leggings 30 are worn, as shown in Fig. 2. To facilitate the putting on and removing of the leggings 30, the lower ends 30!) thereof may be provided with side slits 38c and suitable closure means therefor, such as slidable hookless fasteners 3|. A hem 36f may be provided at the rim opening of the upper extension portion 360 of each legging, said hem 39f having suitable adjustment means, as for example an expansible resilient gathered section 3E0 extending along the rear side thereof. At the front side of each hem 30, there may be secured a female part 32 of a snap fastener. The lower end 30a of said leggings may also have spaced female parts of snap fasteners carried thereon, as for example at 32 and at 33 on the rider am of the hookless fastener 3i. Said leggings 3!! may be formed of suitable textile material and be otherwise constructed in. the well understood manner.

Fig. 6 shows a flexible strap Ml which carries on its opposite ends male parts 4! and 42 of snap fasteners which are adapted to engage and cooperate with the female

32 and 33 of the legging 30, respectively. Said strap 4|] is adapted to extend across the bottom of the shoe I4 for retaining the leggings against upward displacement, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

In Fig. 7, there is shown an adjustable elastic garter 5B which has on its upper end, a male part 5| of a snap fastener, the latter being adapted to engage and cooperate with one of the female snap fastener parts 22 on the waist bandoftheshorts 20. Said garter 50 has adjustably movable therealong a buckle 52 which carries another male part 53 of a snap fastener, the latter being adapted to engage and cooperate with the female snapfastener part 32 of the leggings extension portion 300, as is shown in Fig. 2.

From the above description and the drawings, the invention will now be apparent. After the child C is dressed with the undergarments, consisting of the union suit ID, the waist' I l, the stockings l2 secured by the supporters l3 and the shoes [4, the shorts 20 are put on to cover the lower portion of the union suit in the well understood manner. Each of the leggings 30 is next put on over the stockings l2, by first opening the slit 30a so as to facilitate the passage of the shoe through the legging. Next the garters 5!] are applied by joining the upper male snap fastener parts 5| to the female snap fastener parts 22 on the waistband of the shorts H3,

' while the male snap fastener parts 53 on the buckles 52 are engaged to the female snap fastener parts 32 on the legging extension portions 300. By moving the buckles 52 along the garters 5|], the proper and most comfortable position can be attained for supporting the upper extension portions of the legging 30.

The rear resilient gathered portions 30g of the leggings 30 serve as self-adjusting means to fit the upper part of the leggings to the contour of the thighs of the child. This self-adjusting means is made of sufficient range to fit limbs which are relatively thicker or thinner than would be found on a normal child. After the garters 56 and each of the leggings 36 have been adjusted, as described above and shown in Fig. 2, the fly of the .shorts 28 may be closed up by drawing the rider 2 la up along the hookless slide fastener 2i. p

The waist band 2% is also made self-adjusting, due to the expansible resilient gathered section 200 and will conform to the size of the child's waist, the range of sizes being so designed to comfortably fit either children who are below or above the normal Weight of a child for which the garment is sized.

The child C, after putting on the clothes described above, and a blouse or waist B will then be dressed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which dress, as is seen, is of neat appearance and eliminates the usual bulkiness apparel of this type inherently have where the leggings and shorts are combined and made of a single piece. By making separate garments as provided by the invention, the fit is greatly improved, because, as is seen from Fig. 2, the upper extension portion 300 of the legging 3D is interposed between the leg portion I!) of the union suit I0 and the leg portion 20a of the shorts 20. Thus the. legging 30 serves not only as an outergarment but also has the upper portion 300 thereof utilized as an inner garment for covering any lightly clad portions of the childs body, this upper portion 300 usually being concealed, greatly adds to the well dressed appearance, since it provides for the complete exposure of the leg portions 20a of the shorts 2!].

It is apparent that the leggings 30 may be readily removed without the shorts 20, thus further improving the dress-appearance, and since with one-piece garments, it is necessary to wear an extra pair of shorts or the equivalent when the wearer is dressed for both indoors and outdoors, such extra garment is eliminated. In practising the present invention two sets of outergarments in the form of shorts are unnecessary. The shorts 20 serve for both indoor and outdoor service.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a childs wearing apparel in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. Wearing apparel comprising a body portion having a size self-adjusting Waist band, a crotch and leg portions, separate leggings adapted to cover the limbs of the wearer, said leggings each having an upper extension extending under said leg portion, each extension having substantially the same diameter as the opening of the leg portion, said extension having a size self-adjusting section normally located below the level of the waist band and above the level of the opening of the leg portion, an adjustable garter extending along the inner side of each leg portion, said garter having one end attached to the waist band and the other end attached to the legging extension for securing the garter to support the legging from the waist band.

2. Outer wearing apparel having a body portion comprising a waist band, a crotch and leg portions terminating at the knee regions of the wearer, in combination with a pair of leggings, each having a portion adapted to extend about the limb of the wearer, said leggings each formed with an upwardly dire'cted extension on the front thereof made continuous with said limb covering portion and adapted to cover the thigh of the wearer within and underlying said leg portion, the rear portion of the upper edge of each leg being constricted, the lower end of each legging being formed with an opening adapted in shape to conform to the contour of a shoe, and supporting means extending along the inner side of said leg portions, connecting with each of the legging extensions for retaining the leggings in position, said supporting means having one end attached to the waist band and the other end attached to a legging extension, the upper part of each of said leggings having substantially the same diameter as the opening of said leg portions, the garment thereby presenting the appearance of a unitary garment.
