SUSPENDERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,519, dated February 18, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Monrrz RosENsTooK, of the city and county of New York, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has reference to suspenders; and it consists of certain improvements which are fully set forth in the following specifica IO tion and shown'in the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.

The ob ect of my invention is to provide an improved construction of suspenders for general use, but more particularly for use with a shirt such as fully set out in another pending application of mine bearing even date with this. In that application the suspenders are put on under the shirt and the ends of the tabs are passed through slits in the shirt and buttoned to the waistband of the 'tion also admits of attaching a detachable pocket upon the Suspender-strap.

My object is, further, to construct a suspender having full elasticity and adj ustability, and with as little metal about the sus- 3o pender as possible, thereby avoiding rust, corrosion, and discomfort due thereto.

In carrying out my inventionl provide the front portion of the shoulder-straps with button-holes, and so construct the tabs for the front and back that they may be buttoned 'on. The button-holes for each strap are preferably formed in a separate piece of material and secured to the strap. By employing detachable buttons the tabs may be adjusted 40 higher up or lower down, to suit the convenience of the wearer. Theshoulder-straps are preferably united at the back by means of a porous or open-work elastic section, which will permit all movements of the body and I also provide a detachable pocket for one or both of the shoulder-straps and many details of construe tion which are fully set out hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating a suspender embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation through one of the shoulder-straps and its connections. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of a suspender, illustrating a modification of my invention in the manner of forming the back or rear portion.

A Aare the two shoulder-straps, and are united at the rear to an elastic section B, which is formed of open -work or anysuitable material having elasticity and perforations. By this construction the shoulderstraps are movable both laterally and vertically together or separate, allowing them to adjust themselves to all possible movements of the body of the wearer.

By employing open-work and elastic material at the rear I am enabled to make a cooler suspender, and therefore one which will enable the elastic employed to retain its elasticity for a greater length of time. The tabs D in the rear may be secured directly to the lower end of the elastic material B in any suitable manner, but preferably by means of a removable button F, adapted to be passed through button-holes O and E, respectively, upon the elastic portion and the tabs, or. the two tabs D may be made separate and secured independently to. the rear ends of the shoulder-straps, as shown in 3. By this means the tabs can be readily disconnected, if desired. It is also evident that by making two or more button-holes C in the back the tabs may be adjustable thereon to increase or decrease the length of the suspenders.

In the construction shown in Fig. 3 each of the rear ends of the shoulder-straps Ais provided with an independent series of these button holes O 0, preferably formed in separate pieces of material C attached to the shoulderstraps. The lower ends of the tabs D are provided with the usual button-holes G, and immediately above said button-holes G such tabs may be provided with additional button-holes H, through which buttons I may be arranged for securing the tabs to the shirt, as set out in my application hereinbefore referred to, and designed to prevent the ends of the tabs from being accidentally withdrawn through the slits or perforations in the shirt. The front portions of the Suspender-straps A are provided with a series of button-holes K, arranged preferably one above the other, and

it is desirable that these button-holes shallbe formed in separate pieces J, which are secured at top and bottom and on one side by a line of stitches j to the said shoulder-strap. This construction enables the ready insertion or removal of the buttons T Q. The front tabs L are provided at their upper parts with button-holes P and at their lower parts with the usual button-holes M, and above them additional button-holes N for use in connection with buttons 0, as in the case of the tabs 1) at the rear. The upper parts of these tabs L are provided with a loop U at the rear, as shown in Fig. 2, for receiving the lower end of the shoulder-strap A. These front tabs are thereby adjustable upon the ends of the shoulder-straps by simply adjusting the button Q in different holes K.

R is a pocket, which is provided at the top and bottom with button-holes S, and which is connected to the suspender-straps by means of buttons T Q, as shown particularlyin Fig. 2. It will be readily understood that this pocket is removable, and its lower end may be above or under the upper end of the tab L, as desired.

The buttons shown are made like cuff-buttons, and may be of any of the usual styles of cuff-buttons adapted for the purpose,which are now found upon the market. It is also evident that in place of using cuff-buttons or buttons which are removable the buttons may be permanently secured to the suspenders.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that there is little or no metal about the entire suspender, and therefore there is no liability to rustand corrosion and the soiling of the garments due thereto.

I do not limit myself to the minor details of construction, as they may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Suspenders consisting of two shoulderst-raps flexibly connected to each other at the back and having their front ends provided with auxiliary button-holed pieces, detachable tabs for attachment to the trousers, and buttons for connecting said detachable tabs With said auxiliary bands of the shoulderstraps.

2. Suspenders formed of two shoulder-straps united at the back and provided with one or more button-holes at their point of junction, and having their front ends formed with auxiliary pieces of material attached to said front ends and provided with button-holes arranged one above the other and extending through said auxiliary pieces only, tabs for attachment to the trousers at the back and front, formed with button-holes at their upper portions, and removable buttons for attaching said tabs to the ends of said suspenders.

3. Suspenders having the front ends of their shoulder-straps each formed of two thicknesses of material and provided with buttonholes extending through 'one thickness only, in combination with tabs for attachment to the trousers separate from said shoulderstraps and provided with button-holes and buttons for detachably connecting said tabs and shoulder-straps.

4. Suspenders havingafront band secured to a shoulder-strap and provided with buttonholes, the button-holes extending through the front band only, a detachable pocket, and buttons for detachably connecting the pocket to the front bands independently of the shoulder-strap.

5. Suspenders having a shoulder-strap provided with a series of button-holes arranged one above the other, in combination with a detachable pocket, and buttons for detachably connecting said pocket to the shoulderstrap.
