NITED STATES MARK ARONSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DRESS- SKIRT.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,404, dated March 28, 1893.
Application filed December 2, 1892. Serial No. 453,803. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, MARK ARONSON, of the city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ladys Dress- Skirt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved ladys dress skirt, which is simple in construction, arranged for perfectly fitting it on various sized waists, especially with a view to obviate the usual sagging of the Waist-band and heavy plaited portion at the back of the skirt, and to entirely dispense with the usual disagreeable slit or opening in the back of the skirt.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement as applied and with the flap open. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the improvement with the flap closed; and Fig. 3 is a rearelevation of the same with parts in section.
The improved ladys dress skirt is pm vided with the body portion A, having on its upper end the waist-band B, on the rear of which is permanently secured the plaited portion 0 of the body part A.. The waistband B has its free ends connected with each other by an adjustable device D, preferably made by means of a strap and buckle, as plainly illustratedin Fig. 1, so that the waistband may be perfectly fitted onto the waist of the wearer, it being understood that part of the front of the body A is cut out as at E, to permit of perfectly fitting the upper portion of the body part A according to the shape of the wearers body at the time the waist-band is adjusted by the device D. The cut out portion E, as well as the fastening device D is adapted to be closed by a flap F, preferably forming at its lower end an integral part of the body A of the dress skirt,
the upper part G of the flap being formed like the waist-band B and being adapted to be attached at its sides to the ends of the waist-band at opposite sides of the fastening device D. As illustrated in the drawings the portion G of the flap F forms a continuation of the waist-band B and is attached 'to the latter by buttons H or other suitable means.
Now, it will be seen that when the dress skirt is first fitted on the wearer, the fastening device D is adjusted to perfectly fit the waist-band on the wearers body and then the flap F is brought upward over the opening E and fastening device D, so asto mark through the buttonholes in the part G, the place for the buttons H on the waist-band B, after which the buttons are moved to and secured in the proper place on the waist-band, so that a perfect fit of the flap F is had on the upper portion of the body A and with its part Gon the waist-band B.
By the arrangement described, the garment can be readily fitted on different sized waists, and the usual slit or opening in the back of the skirt is entirely dispensed with, thus preventing display of under garments through the slit or opening, as is so frequently the case when ladies seat themselves, &c. Furthermore, the waist-band is tightly adjusted and all sagging of the skirt at any part is entirely prevented, so that the skirt hangs properly and gracefully.
The sides of the flap F extend or overlap the sides of the opening E, so that a "full adjustment can be made for persons say with a small waist and large hips, or vice versa. The flap is so arranged that it forms a graceful trimming for the skirt.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture a ladys dress skirt comprising a body portion formed with a plaited closed back and an opening in the front, a waist band rigidly connected with the upper end of the said body portion and provided at its free ends with an adj ustablefastening device extending across the said front opening, a flap formed integral with the front of the said body portion and adapted to close the said front opening, the upper end of the flap being provided with a waist band section adapted to overlap and be attached to the sides of the waist band to form an auxiliary fastening device for the waist band, and buttons secured in the said waist band and adapted to be engaged by button holes in the said Waist band section, substantially as shown and described.
