SKIRT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1911.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Serial No. 613,558.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVE) HARRY SHAPIRO, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of 177 Mount Royal avenue west, in the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to improvements in skirts, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially of the novel means employed whereby the skirt is drawn in at the waist band over a rear flap according to the measurements as required.
The objects of the invention are to devise a convenient means of adjusting the size of the skirt at the waist to suit the figure, which is particularly advantageous for women in a state of pregnancy, to construct a skirt of that class in which style and neatness are strong features and generally to provide a skirt simple to fit on and cheap to manufacture.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, as it appears when fitted on the figure. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the skirt thrown open at the waist line. Fig. 8 is an enlarged perspective detail of the upper portion of the skirt, showing particularly the arrangement of the fastenings. Fig. I is a plan view from above of the waist line of the skirt in its fitted position.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the skirt having a flap portion 2 extending upwardly to the waist line and partially closing the rear opening 3.
4: is the waist band of much greater length than is ordinarily required, to extend around the waist of the figure.
5 are loops preferably of metal and flexibly secured at the ends of the waist band 4 at the edges of the rear opening 3.
6 is the waist belt, preferably of elastic material and centrally secured. in relation to its length at the upper end of the flap 2, and having the buckle 7 at one end thereof, through which the other end is inserted and fastened, thus securing said belt around the waist, said belt at each side of the flap 2 extending through the loops 5, whereby when the waist belt 6 is fastened around the waist of the wearer, the ends of the waist band 4: are permanently held up at the waist level, though slidably arranged on said waist belt 6 by means of said loops 5. Y
8 and 9 are the members of the glove fasteners used, the members 8 being secured across the out-side top end of the flap 2 on.
the same line as the belt 6 and the members 9 being secured on the outside of the band 4 toward the loop ends of said band, all of said fasteners being suitably spaced in order to properly adjust the skirt.
In the use of this skirt, the belt 6 is first fastened around the waist of the figure, and as it is preferably of elastic material, it will adjust itself easily to the size of the waist.
This holds the flap 2 permanently in its upper position, that is the top of said flap being exactly on the waist line. The waist band 4 is then suitably adjusted by placing the front of it in proper center line and sliding one of the loops 5 around and then making the fold and reducing that fold until the dome fastener member is reached, just to one side of the center and it is then fastened. The other side is similarly brought up in the same manner by the fold and fastened to the fastener member immediately to the other side of the center, with the result that the two folds hang down and completely close in the flap 2.
It must be understood that, without departing from the invention, other forms of fasteners may be used and the waist bands may be somewhat changed, as well as the opening in the rear of the skirt, so long as it is held withinthe scope of the invention, as pointed out in the claims.
The feature of the loops flexibly secured to the band around the major portion of the skirt at the waist line, must be particularly emphasized in this description, as by means of these loops sliding on the belt attached to the flap, the easy adjustment and fastening of the skirt are made, besides a stylish and neat appearance of the back of the skirt are secured in the same way.
It must be understood that this invention includes all like garments for women, such as petticoats and all forms of underskirts.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a garment of the class described, a skirt having a rear opening, loops secured to said skirt at the edges of said opening at the waist line, a belt adapted to be secured saws.
around the waist and extending through said loops, and fasteners having members secured to the exterior of said waist belt and members secured to said skirt on each side of said opening.
2. In a garment of the class described, in combination, a skirt having a rear opening and a flap extending upwardly behind said opening and terminating at the waist line, a belt secured to said flap atthe top end and adapted to be fastened around the waistand hold said flap in its upper position, loops slidably arranged on said belt on each side of said flap and secured to the major portion of said skirt at the edges of said opening at the waist line and fasteners having members secured in a row suitably spaced across said flap at the top end thereof on the waist line and members secured in rows to the major portion of the skirt on the outer side of the waist line and similarly spaced to the aforesaid members and adapted to fasten thereto.
3. In a garment of the class described, in combination, a skirt having a rear opening I and a flap portion extending upwardly behind said opening and terminating at the waist line, an elastic waist belt secured to the upper end of said flap portion and adapted to be fastened around the waist of the wearer, a waist band secured at the top of the major portion of the skirt of greater length than ordinarily required to surround the waist of the wearer, loops secured to said major portion waist band atthe edges of said opening and slidably arranged on said flap waist belt at each side of said flap and fasteners having members secured to the outer side of said flap on the line of said flap waist belt and suitably spaced and members secured on the outer side of said waist bandof the major portion of the skirt in rows and suitably spaced extending in wardly from said loop ends.
Signed at the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, this seventh day of March, 1911.
